Shouldn't Ferrets Be Legal in California - By Now?

The struggle to legalize domestic ferrets has been going on for decades. We think we are at a turning point and would like to invite you to get involved.

We don't know how many ferrets are in California - but we do know that people in the pet industry tell us that 27% of the nation's ferret supplies are sold inside the state of California. That's an awful lot of illegal ferrets!

And yet - according to our research performed by Sacramento State University:

  • No feral domestic ferrets have ever been found
  • No livestock or food crops have ever been harmed by an escaped domestic ferret
  • Domestic ferrets are much safer than dogs or cats or any other household pet with the exception of a guinea pig

How Can You Help?

LegalizeFerrets.org was set up in 2005 in an effort to legalize ferrets. We had originally considered a ballot measure but we found there is too much public ignorance to overcome on our small budget. We then decided to file an Environmental Impact Report. The initial research is almost done.

But we know we will face a mountain of opposition. People within the Department of Fish and Game have told us ferrets will never be legal. The Sierra Club and other "environmentalist" organizations are on record in opposition and will not discuss the issue.

We have a free weekly email newsletter, CLIFFNotes, published every Sunday. Over 5,000 have subscribed.
