Insulinomas in Ferrets

Ed Note:  There seems to be some confusion over the role of ferrevite and similar treats in contributing to insulinomas in ferrets.  Here is the word from Denice at Marshall Ferrets:

Insulinomas are the most common neoplasia (tumor - can be malignant or benign) in ferrets.

These are tumors of the pancreas that produce insulin, often at high levels, resulting in low blood sugar levels and possibly death (depending on severity) if left untreated.

The cause of this tumor is unknown (like many other cancers in both human and veterinary medicine).
There are no studies implicating Ferretvite as a cause of insulinoma

Fausto Update

Here I am with Fausto, my ferret who likes to follow me around.  If you look carefully you can see his coat is looking very adrenal-esque.  Last week he had his first lupron injection.  Dr Jenkins said we might see some improvement in a couple of weeks.  And a few days later it appears we have located some Suprelorin (Deslorelin) which I am very excited about.

I will of course keep everyone updated.  There is a ton of interest in this new anti-adrenal medication.

Ed Note - always be careful when mixing dogs and ferrets.  My Golden Retriever had one ferret pinned under her big paws the other day - glad I keep an eye on them.

No Response Yet From Public Records Request Act

In California we are supposed to have a right to records of our state government.  On February 4th an official request was made and acknowledged by Megan Penick, Public Records Act Officer at the Department of Fish and Game.  Read response here.

This is very important because we believe we can undermine Fish and Game Commissioner President Jim Kellogg's repeated statements that "in the past ten years..." "...we have covered the ferret issue 4 of 5 times."  Our records show it was last discussed 12 years ago when the Commission directed proponents to fund the Environmental Impact Report before the Commission would proceed further with the ferret issue. The merits of ferret legalization was not even discussed back then and it could be as far back as 1995 when the Commission really looked at the issue.

It has been a little trickier to find how much time we need to wait for our public documents. According to the Californians Aware website:
Delay is allowed only to resolve good faith doubts as to whether all or part of a record is accessible by the public. So, for example, if the requester asks to see the minutes of public meetings, there is no need to make the “determination” as to whether or not they are public, since minutes of public meetings are, without question, public records. That being the case, access is to be provided “promptly,” not put off for 10 days (Government Code §6253, subd. (b))[ to underscore this point, subd. (d) states that “Vothing in (the CPRA) shall be construed to permit an agency to delay or obstruct the inspection or copying of public records.” And while the 10-day period is not a legal deadline for producing the records, the date of production should not lag the 10-day (or, if extended with notice to the requester, up to 14 days more) “determination” point by much, because in most if not all cases, the person making the determination will have already had to assemble and review the records in order to do so. Once the determination has been made, in other words, actual release of the records in question should not take much time to accomplish.
I requested an update on Feb 15th and 18th and never received a reply.

I have also been surprised to not get an answer for a claim form against the Department of Fish and Game.  This is in regards to one of their wildlife biologists telling a reporter that ferrets are "voracious predators."  I sent a certified letter demanding a retraction and have not received a reply.  Therefore, since the Department of Fish and Game is knowingly putting out false information which damages our efforts at ferret legalization I intent to sue in Small Claims Court.  The first process is to submit a claim.  The person at Fish and Game I spoke to didn't know what form I meant and would get back to me.  It has only been a day, but I didn't receive a call

The next Fish and Game Commission meeting is on March 3rd, a Thursday.  Public comments usually begin at 8:30 am.  The location is the Embassy Suites at Los Angeles International Airport North, 9801 Airport Blvd. Los Angeles.  We will of course be there and the more ferret lovers there the better.  Perhaps we'll unveil our new tv commercial at a press conference right before the meeting.

Exciting news!  The little girl has been cast for our commercial.  Her name is Sierra Pitkin and she is a very talented young actress from Vancouver, BC.  She has been in such feature films as "Juno" with Michael Cera, and "The Traveler" with Val Kilmer.  She loves ferrets and is excited to be a part of this commercial.  Thank you to Sierra and also her mom Tracy Pitkin for volunteering to help out.
Progress on our Upcoming TV Commercial

We received a number of suggestions on our upcoming TV Commercial.  Most helpful were the comments from Todd Dayton who did our YouTube Video

Here is a revised, but still tentative script:

LITTLE GIRL’S ROOM

A LITTLE GIRL is standing in her bedroom, surrounded by toys and stuffed animals.  Beams of sunlight shine through venetian blinds.  She is holding FRISCO the ferret in her arms, laughing and smiling as he kisses her face.

VOICE OVER

Domestic Ferrets are legal in all the contiguous United States except California. Contrary to the science, California Fish & Game have stated Domestic Ferrets are a threat to California's environment, public health and agriculture.
At LegalizeFerrets.org we have been fighting to change this unjust law for years. Our members have even funded our own Preliminary Environmental Impact Report.

We see a close up of FRISCO’s cute face as she pets him and hugs him close.

FOOTAGE OF JIM KELLOG

Then insert some relevant clip of Mr. Kellogg that illustrates his dismissive and nonfactual behavior.

Suddenly fear strikes the face of the LITTLE GIRL, as she turns to face the door.  A man walks into the room, his face not visible.  He takes FRISCO away from the LITTLE GIRL.  She cries at the loss of her pet.  She is sobbing.

LITTLE GIRL
No!!!  Frisco!!!

VOICEOVER
Cut to: outside - police cars at crazy angles on the streets, lights flashing...

In slo-mo SWAT member is walking away - Frisco is peeking up over SWAT members shoulder looking lost, sniffing, wonder what is going on.
Cut to - (voice over) Join us
We continue to live in fear.  This is WRONG.  You can make a difference.  Go to http://www.legalizeferrets.org/ NOW to find out how.
619-303-0645.

Voice over: Do it for the little guy!

CLOSE UP of FRISCO’s face as he’s carried away in slow motion.

In Conclusion

Am I paranoid or is the Fish and Game Commission really shutting us out, ignoring the Public Records Request Act, etc?  This kind of behavior can't last long.  It will come back to bite them.  And that's why we're going to win.

Still, a lot going on.  We are selling these t-shirts, they are all black.

is the most fun you can have at a ferret party.  Does some other area of the state wish to host the photo event?  It requires a larger area that is secure because we certainly don't wish to get busted having photos taken of these dangerous creatures.

Its time to think of our 2012 Legalize Ferrets calendar.  We have shot the 2010 and 2011 in San Diego.  It

The 2010 issue made rich use of props - we had very few props for the 2011 issue.  Some people felt the props over shadowed the ferrets, others thought the 2011 issue was a little bare.

Fausto's 2010 Calendar Shot Fausto in this year's calendar.  I"m not playing favorites :-)
Marshall Pets has graciously offered to donate props - but what should we use as a theme?  We like to have the photo shoot sometime around June 1st.

We don't want to compete with Jeanne Carley's ferret calendar.  Let me give her a plug here.  Our goals is to highlight the California ferret owner and legalization effort.

What do you think?

This Year's Ferret Round Up

Ferrets Anonymous has been pretty dorman this year, not at all what we want!

I hope people are geared up and willing to get involved in the actual organized effort to legalize ferrets and ferret welfare in California.  I have heard nothing about anyone wanting to chair the organization.  I know Claudia T has stepped up to organize the round up is willing to help, as am I - but we need fresh blood.
