Readers Column
Ever wonder what a 4lb 2.5oz ferret looks like? Meet Harley Dennis! Affectionately known as "Cobra" by his friends at the vet's office. (some of the extra bulk around his neck is the SQ fluids we had just given him, but still, he's huge) [The stuff on his chin is FerretVite] :)

Here's Phoebe Michelle, chillin' in the starch peanuts
Here's a pic of Bear, Nori, and Rooney cuddling. They are all in the calendar!

"Hi Joe, I am sending you this YouTube video called "Ferret Dance" to share with the other Ferret lovers out there. It made my day. Enjoy!
Click on image to go to the video - warning music gets annoying and won't leave your head! And thanks, Michele!

Is San Diego Animal Control Refusing To Confiscate Ferrets?
We often hear the rumors - "ferrets are now legal, you just can't buy them" (this seems to come from PetSmart employees). So it was a little surprising Animal Control at the Bonita, San Diego County shelter told a ferret owner to come pick up their ferret. The confiscation was a mistake.
Sure enough the owner was actually allowed to pick the ferret up. Further, it was explained to them
that animal control was no longer going out on ferret calls and was no longer seizing ferrets. This is a new change for them and only happened two months ago. They said that Fish and Game wants control of the exotics and wants animal control out of it. So animal control said that they do turn the information over to Fish and Game and it's up to Fish and Game to deal with the ferret.
Don't feel too comfortable for two reasons. As Abraham Lincoln said "the best way to repeal a bad law is to stricltly enforce it" and notice that DFG has not relinquished control over the issue. The personalities at DFG are very different from Animal Control employees.
If anyone knows anything further, such as if you have an "in" at the San Diego Department of Animal Services - please let us know.
OC Pet Expo April 16 - 18, We Need Help!
Southern California's largest pet event happens Friday April 16th through Monday April 18th at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds. I'd really like to attract more people and get a lot of quality sign ups for CLIFFNotes and education every one who is interested.
Is there anyone who can help set the table up on Thursday the 15th? Are you interested in working the booth? So far we have calendars to give away. Our "Ferrets Are More Fun" mini-brochure and we are working on the "Test Your Ferret Knowledge" quiz. I hired a copywriter and of course his computer crashed (hate it when that happens).
If you can help - please contact Pat, contact info is at the bottom!
By the way, thanks to Wysong Pet Foods for donating $300 for the booth. Please visit them, links are at the bottom the page. We get a portion of any sales off these links and last month it was $702. :-) :-)

Our Environmentally Conscious People "Back Out" of Challenge.
Several weeks ago Joe Ferret got an email from someone (seemingly intelligent) offering to prove that ferrets did indeed pose an environmental threat. They accepted the challenge and came up with nothing. Final word is
*sigh* Ok, so, I hate "backing out" and all but I don't really want to spend time on this...and I realized I don't really care whether ferrets are legalized or not, assuming that there is no danger to either native wildlife or the ferrets themselves, etc.
This is what happens when people look at the issue objectivly. This should also be the conclusion of our Environmental Impact Report.
Anyone Have Connections to Animal Planet?
Two people have made this suggestion. It finally sunk in, what a great idea? Does anyone have a contact at Animal Planet?
Have you tried considering emailing animal planet for support?
I sent them an email today asking them why hasn't there been a special of some sort on ferrets since there is movement on trying to get them legalized in california.
Ferrets Not Allowed at LA County Fair
My name is George H and I live in Oklahoma City. I have a medicine man show
And have been contacted by LA county fair to perform for a thirty run. My problem is I
Use ferrets in my show. In fact they are the hit of the show for kids.
I understand that ferrets are illegal in California. If this is true, is it possible to
Get some kind of license for a short period of time. I am curious about why
Ferrets are illegal. Was it because some people didn’t take care of them or
Maybe some escaped and scared the crap out of some politician’s mother.
Note - we haven't heard back from George yet, but this is another example of how the ferret ban is bad for our state.
In Conclusion
Another issue of CLIFFNotes put to bed! It is nice that they kind of write themselves. I get a lot of material from the calls and emails that come into this office. Some are pretty incredible, some sad but it all paints the picture that the ferret ban in unfair and unreasonable.
It's nice to see our mailing list continue to grow and once this darn EIR is done, all our grass roots efforts should come together and we'll get these little guys legalized. I can't wait for the day we are finally successful - and before I hit the nursing home, take my ferrets for a walk!
Note - Lance must have been watching the Super Bowl - he wasn't available to edit. So if you see any mistakes or anything that annoys you - blame Pat. |
