Ferret Holidays 2010

Happy Holidays - Now Get To Work
We realy need a legislative sponsor!

Ferrets in Butte County Need Forever Homes

I live in CA and I don't know who else to ask this so I thought I would ask you since I know I can trust my fellow fuzzy owners.
I have two fuzzys I need to rehome, one male and one female. They are really young one is 3 months the male and the other 5 months the female. I need to find them a safe home were I know they will be taken cared for. I love them dearly but since I am going to be moving soon do not want to risk getting caught with them as I cant guarantee that I will find a good landlord that will be willing to let me keep them.
If u know of anyone in CA who is willing to take good care of my fuzzies would u shoot me an email please.
Thanks.

If you are interested in these two ferrets please send me an email and I will forward it to their current human.

The last day for legislation to be introduced in the California legislature is Friday, January 28th.  For the past several weeks we’ve been asking people to write or email their state assembly member and state senator.  You can see our progress here.

So far only two responses have been received from legislators.  Assemblyman Bill Monning said he would not author the bill and Senator Fran Pavley has sent out an automated response. Other than that, I think we are going to be ignored or brushed off.

Don’t let that happen.  Now is the time to call your representative and ask for an appointment.  If you can’t get an appointment with the legislator, ask to see an aid.  If you live in the district you shouldn't take no for an answer.

Here are a few talking points:

• Ferrets are legal in 48 states.  There are no instances of anything the opponents warn about happening anywhere else.  No harm to agriculture, wildlife or public health.  Our recent preliminary EIR report from Sacramento State once again documents those facts.

• California has more ferrets than the next two states combined.  Californians buy $5,500,000 worth of ferret supplies a year – 27% of that nation’s total.  It makes no sense to ban ferrets since they are already here.

• The ferret ban costs money and is bad for the economy.  It’s bad for the retail pet trade, for veterinarians and people who have to move to California because of employment or the military.

• The law isn’t actively enforced.  We know of no citations for ferret possession in 2010 despite their illegal status.

• Keeping ferrets illegal harms the public’s perception of government, it breeds contempt and disrespect.

• It breaks people’s hearts and prevents people from fully enjoying these wonderful animals.

If you get an appointment or refused an appointment please let us know.  We can arm you with a lot of facts and data.

What We Wanted For Christmas Was A Sponsor on the Senate's Natural Resources Ccommittee - but it's not too late to ask

The Natural Resources Committee is the best place for our bill to originate from - one of these Senators would make a great author.  Regardless of where you live, please send a polite email asking them to author the bill.

Because your request is official, it can't be anonymous.  Don't mention you have ferrets.  Simply say "Dear Senator Pavley, since you are on the State Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee I would like to ask you to help us legalize ferrets in 2011.  Please either introduce a bill or help us find an author.  Feel free t it in your own words.

In Conclusion

This is somewhat a rushed version of CLIFFNotes.  The last issue of the year.
And what a year it has been - and you heard it here first, next year will be our break out year.

We are desperately looking for a legislative sponsor.  That won't be easy.  We are also working the Fish and Game Commission.  While they seem indifferent or hostile based on our first encounter - we've got the goods!  We can prove ferrets are safe, that the ferret ban is bad for the California economy and it is in their best interest to work some sort of legalization.  I'm sure they'd prefer to ignore us - but we aren't going to let that happen.  It couldn't happen if we got a legislative sponsor - so don't be shy, call your state representative.

We will be in front of the Fish and Game Commission again in February in Sacramento.  I'd like to put together some sort of event the evening before.  If anyone has a meeting space up there, please let me know.

There hasn't been time to get anyone to proof this issue.  I hope next year we have a very active Ferrets Anonymous.  LegalizeFerrets was never meant to replace Ferrets Anonymous, it was meant to compliment the efforts.  So if you really want to get involved, please consider running for an office for FA.

Happy New Year and We're Working for That Breakthrough Year!
