 2011 Ferrets Anonymous Revival Plans

FA Treasurer Claudia T. is planning the 2011 Ferret Round Up.  The Round Up is the annual meeting of Ferrets Anonymous to conduct business and have ferret fun. Current President Lance M. has stated that he will not be seeking another term as President of FA this March in order to dedicate more time to assisting CDFEA in legal ferret rescue, and to work more closely with his club, OCFerrets.

The tentative date and location of the FA Round Up is Saturday, March 26th at the Pasadena Humane Society.

LegalizeFerrets.org is officially run out of the San Diego Chapter of Ferrets Anonymous.  The state Ferrets Anonymous has been pretty much inactive all year which is disheartening to those of us who built it up. We need people willing to go the extra mile to keep California ferret enthusiasts informed and on top of things.

FA really needs new blood and ideas - new people, we're not into recycling here (me included) but if you are interested in running for President or being on the board please let me know.  If you would like my help before or after your election, I'm happy to help.

Attention Monterey Area Ferret Owners

My wife and I and two furry pets moved up to Monterey recently and we'd like to meet some local ferret owners. We'd especially like to make some kind of trade in ferret sitting. We're trying to plan our holiday travel and others are, too, but the little guys don't travel so easily. If you like the way we care for our weasels and vice versa, maybe we can help each other out! Please contact Scott at scottsch at alum dot mit dot edu. We anticipate being here around Christmas, but not New Years.

there is already a local ferret club for your area -

Learning to Understand the California Fish and Game Commission/Department

Thanks to everyone who donated - and because of your/their help, we are on our way in front of the California Fish and Game Commission to try to win legalization for our ferrets.  $714 came in CEQA donations and $185 in Calendar Sales came in last week - so Woo Hoo! We're in the game!

We have written a $500 deposit check to Matt Trask, our CEQA Consultant.  He is preparing us for the Dec 16th Fish and Game Commission meeting, where we get three minutes. Actually I need a few other people to cede me a few minutes in front of the Commission.

To get an idea of what we are up against, read the letter sent by Dale Steele, Program Manager, Wildlife Species Conservation Program at the California Fish and Game Commission.  Read the letter here.

There are many factual errors to Mr. Steele's letter.  But please keep in mind we are trying to foster a relationship based on cooperation, not hostility.  People at DFG have named names to me of people in the ferret community they do not like (surprise, I wasn't on it!)

I want to stress, and it should always be stressed, that this list is comprised of WILD animals-- no other domesticated species is on the list. The reason the list is comprised of wild animals of course is because domesticated species are outside of the jurisdiction of the Department of Fish and Game.

We challenged the department to determine whether or not the ferret is "normally domesticated in this state" and they declined. Of course should they formally declare the ferret as wild their position would be akin to the Catholic Church v. Galileo and we all know how that ended up!

Jeanne Carley
Californians For Ferret Legalization

Besides factual errors - we are realizing just how different they treat our issue from any other issue that comes in front of them.  We are hoping to use it to our advantage.  My feeling at this early stage is we will be able to maneuver DFG so they will make some concessions.  We have everything in our corner except a big budget.

Informal Ferret People Gathering

on the Eve of the F&G Meeting

Ferret lovers are meeting at: Rusty Pizza Parlor, 15 East Cabrillo, Santa Barbara at 6pm for some informal talk on ferrets, how the legalization effort is going and what to expect at the F&G Meeting.

Please let me know if you will attend so we know how big a table to ask for.

We REALLY NEED HELP with the Legislator Search NOW

We have a small window of time to line up a legislator sponsor for the 2011 legislative session.  Please write your legislator (your state assembly member and state senator) and ask that they sponsor a ferret legalization bill in the next session.

That is a Word 2000 Doc - modify it however you want.  The more personalized the better.

Newly elected members of the legislature should be setting up their offices this week. After you've written your letter or phoned or emailed. (letter is best) please let me know so I can put the information up on the web site.  Let's get 10 people in each legislature's district.

Last Week to Get Signatures on our Unofficial Petitions

It appears Governor Schwarzenegger is going to leave office as a great disappointment to us ferret owners.  In his nearly 7 years in office he has never acknowledged our questions or requests.  Although when he ran for office he promised to sign any ferret bill landed on his desk - he did in fact veto a ferret amnesty bill in 2004.

I do have this desire to have a rally in Sacramento and mail him ferret poop but there are too many important things to do.  But Governor Schwarzenegger leaves behind a disgraceful legacy of lying and indifference to us - "the little guy" as in people without influence or big bucks.

We have received very few petitions back.  But we will mail what we have to our disgraceful Governor on Dec 16th - so please download and sign.

A donation was made in memory of Harley Dennis, and Phoebe Michele. We use Harley's baby photo a lot because he was just so darn cute.

thank you!

In Conclusion

We're in the thick of things.  Please, contact your legislator and ask him or her to sponsor the ferret bill.  If we don't get a sponsor, DFG won't take us seriously.  And just the opposite, having an advocate in the legislature - DFG will have to deal with the issue.  Like I said, let's get ten names listed under every legislator.  Keep me posted of who you ask and what if any response you get!

I'm wondering what kind of 2011 we will have.  Either "year of the ferret" (finally!) or a great disapointment.  I need to request a new CLIFFNotes banner from Heidi our graphic artists.  What theme should we use?  For 2010 it has been "Success in 2010 - Working on the Environmental Impact Report."  We've been thinking of an obstacle course or rouch seas.  Any ideas?  We do have many  more obstacles to get through - the Commission and/or the Legislature.  Raising enough money, etc.  If you have ideas - I'd love to hear it.

Also - the new year is about here and we still have many calendars:

A Generous Donation of T-Shirts

Hi!  Saw your request for $500 in donations.  I have attached 3 pictures of my t-shirts with an original ferret drawing.  I will donate 20, in various sizes and designs.  If you get $25 per shirt, you have $500.  Let me know if you would like them, and I will mail right away.  Christmas is coming!  Thanks,  Nancy at Ferret Oasis

How to order?

In Pink:   1@2X, 3@XL, 2@L, 3@M.    Green:   1@2X, 1@XL, 3@L, 2@S.   Yellow:   2@XL, 2@L.  The yellow is very yellow!  Next time I am using lighter colors, but I one person who bought the yellow shirt loved it.  Clients have told me that other shirts are mostly white or black, and they appreciate having bright colors to choose from.  Do you want me to mail them all to you,  or mail them from here?  Postage is usually a couple of dollars for each.  Good luck, hope you make some money!  Nancy

Please use this link - http://www.legalizeferrets.org/donate.html for $25 and send me a note which color and size. Be sure to include a valid shipping address.

Phew!

Thank you everybody for supporting this effort!  We're going to make it!
