Opponent's Column

I have seen your campaign to bring ferret legalization to California. My question to you is, don't you think there are enough animals out there in shelters? Mistreated, abused, neglected. Now, because you think they are such cool animals you want them legalized? In this economy people will be leaving them behind too when they can't afford them. Pets, animals nowadays are "novelty" items and once the thrill wears off we know what happens. Look in the shelters!!!! Where will they go when someone can no longer care for them? They get sick? You are only creating MORE PROBLEMS. LET THE FERRETS BE!! We don't need more animals when we have thousands in the shelters. Your campaign is selfish and has no regard for these little animals.

I really wish your campaign would be to help animals and control the pet population, not bring these incredible creatures imminent doom at the hands selfish wanna-be ferret owners. I'm sure your intentions are good, but I don't think you truly care about what will happen to them should they be legal in California or anywhere for that matter.

Sincerely,

Phillip Andrews

Note - I included this because it is important to know our opposition, why do some  people feel ferrets should be illegal. Of all the arguments against ferret legalization this is the only one with merit.  But who is Phillip to say which pets are legal and not. Further correspondence with Phillip was futile, I think he is a moron, but we get this occasinally.

Dr Rene Gandolfi – Things You Probably Don’t Know About Ferret Health

For specifics. There appears to be a couple of ways to prevent the development of adrenal disease in ferrets that don't as yet have the disease. Considering that over 50% of ferrets will develop AD in their lifetime, prevention has enormous value. In addition, it seems possible that with drugs like Lupron and Deslorelin, many AD cases can be managed medically, thus avoiding the cost and troubles associated with adrenal surgery. In addition, I have some "hot" news about a vaccine that is being developed to prevent AD.

In the case of Distemper vaccination, two studies (not published yet) have evidence that as much as 90% of ferrets that have been properly vaccinated against distemper may not need boosters yearly, and may even be protected for the rest of their lives. Considering how terrible vaccine reactions are, this information might have serious impact on our vaccination strategies.

As we reach completion of the Ferret Legalization EIR study (not the actual EIR, but the research needed to file the EIR) and we are in the heat of a bruising political season, California ferret lovers are set to gather and take stock on the progress unfolding.

The full program is available here.  The hotel room is going to be a tight squeeze with a maximum of  125 people theater style.  So reserve your seats quickly. There may still be changes to the program, we have invited Jerry Brown, Meg Whitman and Arnold Schwarzenegger to attend (Don't hold your breath).  If we can't get at least an acknowledgment from the Brown or Whitman campaigns - expect Joe Ferret to be on hand to announce a write in campaign for Governor.  Lotsa Fun and Excitement!

Calendar Update

The photos are taken for the 2011 Legalize Ferrets Calendar.  Our graphic artist will come up with a design shortly.  We have hired a copywriter to help with the writing.

I have three entries for the Introduction.  Remember, the winner gets the Ferret Estate cage from Marshall Pets.  You have until Wednesday July 7th to submit your entry.  I will send the entries to our copywriter without any names attached and let her pick the winner. So far I have entries from Cynthia G, Linda P and Dustin S and Jonathan L.  If you sent it in and you aren't one of those three people, please contact me.  Details of the contest are in last week's CLIFFNotes

In Conclusion

Happy Fourth of July everyone!  Remember to keep your ferrets safe.  People coming and going can lead to lost ferrets - and I hate to get those calls!

This is kind of an abbreviated CLIFFNotes.  There is a lot going on and things are going to become exciting.  Today's excitement is limited to the upcoming Legalize Ferrets Revival - an event unlike we've ever had.

I have given Lance the day off - so any errors or anyone offended, blame me! Happy 21st Birthday Charlene!  Stay out of trouble, that is a dangerous year!
