Round Up Speaker Notes:
Dr. Sari Kanfer, DVM – Dr. Kanfer will be speaking on diseases that are threatening ferrets today, including intestinal diseases and how to properly feed ferrets, to help avoid some of those problems. Dr. Kanfer is a graduate of ColoradoStateUniversity and has been actively pursuing exotic animal care since graduation. She recently opened her own practice and regularly attends conferences on exotic animals, including the annual IFC (International Ferret Congress) Symposiums. Dr. Bruce Levine, DVM - Dr. Levine will be speaking on adrenal disease in ferrets, as well as his opinions that 100% of ferrets will become adrenal in their lifetime. While many consider this a hot button for debate, we welcome Dr. Levine’s speech and question & answer period. Dr. Levine is a graduate of the University of Illinois and did postgraduate work at the Overton Zoo in Memphis, Tennessee. He is Board certified in companion animal practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Dawn M., CDFEA Dawn will speak about the activities and purpose of CDFEA (California Domestic Ferret Education Alliance), a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that exists to educate the public about domestic ferrets, as well as serve to protect ferrets that may be in harm’s way.Dawn’s hoping to have big news to share by the Round Up, or at least give you some insight as to what is on the horizon for CDFEA this year – and trust me, it’s pretty exciting stuff. You won’t want to miss this.
New LegalizeFerrets.org Brochure Almost Ready - You Find the Errors! | | | the inside | and the outside click on the image to open a larger view. |
The artwork for our new brochure is just about done. Before we go to the printers we thought we'd run it in CLIFFNotes for any last minute corrections or improvements. If you spot something, let me know. Best way would be to fax a copy with your suggestions to 619-303-0645. We failed in our attempt to find the cost of raising a ferret. According to people who responded to our survey. The average cost of keeping a ferret for a month is: | Food: | $30.54 | | Vet Care: | $146.81 | | Supplies: | $50.32 | | Misc: | $37.05 | | Total: | $264.72 |
Ferrets are expensive, but not that expensive. So we took the bonus question off the quiz. - We'll have the quiz ready to hand out at the Orange County Pet Expo next month.
Ferrets Confiscated in Oceanside | | Hand over your ferrets! | We have a report that the Department of Fish and Game confiscated four ferrets from the brother of one of our members. It would be highly unusual for D.F.G. to do the confiscation themselves (though they did break my door down many years ago, along with the PD and Animal Control). Also a fine of nearly $400 was delivered. We have heard from multiple sources that Animal Control is no longer interested in ferrets, so this may be the case. Fines delivered on the spot is also a new one for us. We don't know if D.F.G. or animal control presented a warrant. PLEASE PEOPLE, IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU -DEMAND THE FRIGGIN WARRANT!!! We will keep you posted.
More on the Michele Bowers Case This article really angered me. I am a proud ferret owner living in Yuma, AZ (no worries here about legalities), but working as a teacher for the last 11 years in both Cal. and AZ, and working with so many children from blatantly dysfunctional families, I feel I had to write about the Michelle Bower issue. I remember an incident in the 90's (I think it was the 90's) about an infant mauled to death by a large pet rat. I don't remember anyone making a movement against rats. And don't get me started about the multitude of children and adults seriously mauled or killed by domesticated dogs ("it's not the dog, it's the owner...."). But one issue involving a ferret (no one killed), and the furry guys get a bad rap? What nonsense! Simon L. I think the article should bother everyone reading CLIFFNotes. There are a lot of unanswered questions - and frankly I'm annoyed that no one in the media who is covering this story has asked how we feel about it. I did contact a private investigator in Carson City, NV who gave me a price of $1500 to investigate the case. I'd like answers to where were the parents, did they forget to feed the ferret, etc? But our investigator acknowledged that it might not do any good and a group of people I rely on for advice didn't think it was a good idea.
We're Still Looking for Meeting Space for Northern California September 25th I have called about a dozen hotels and banquet halls around the Walnut Creek area. One Country Club called me back. Prices are much higher in the Bay Area than they are down in San Diego. We have a lead at the Siusun Community Center. Still a little pricey and no easy way to get there, 1/2 way from the Bay Area and Sacramento. A few other people are working on leads. If you know of a location for 125 - 150 people, from noon to 8 pm, one light buffet included for a budget of about $1500 please let me know.
In Conclusion - I'll see you at the Round Up next week. I'll have our full line of merchandise! I received two helpful emails regarding my skinny ferret Quito and ear mites. Someone graciously recommended Pingsford Porridge. Unfortunately now I can't get Quito to eat anything at all. He's walking fur and bones. So I make up a concoction of Glucerna, Prednisone and since I have it, a little Duck Soup and syringe it down his throat three times a day. His vet check visit didn't reveal anything except dehydration. I don't expect Quito to be around much longer, but he's still fairly active and raises his head up when he hears his name. I do use the Marshall Ear Cleaner and I bought an over the counter kitten ear mite cleaner for the ferrets, a cat ear mite killer for the cat and dog/cat ear mite killer for the dogs. Everyone survived the first dose. Maybe we'll be earmite free some day! If your ferret is scratching his ear in that certain way, you, too have earmites in your home! I'm still excited about getting our 3rd of 4 reports from Sacramento State University for the research being done before filing the Environmental Impact Report. I have not yet heard from the Fish and Game Commission in regards to my certified letter asking if they can remove ferrets from the prohibited species list without an act of the legislature. A simple question but I bet they don't know! And we gearing up for Election 2010 asking the candidates about the ferret issue. We're going to have loads of fun and I'm hoping we can capture the media's attention this year. So stay tuned and keep supporting us! Pat Wright (619) 303-0645 |
