Member's Column
Hey what happened to member contributions to CLIFFNotes? I know last week's issue was widely read. But why do I have to steal photos off of people's Facebook pages to run adorable photos? (Even though I have permission).

More on Pet Insurance
Hi! I have two ferrets and at one point I thought that VPI Pet Insurance would be a good idea. Unfortunately, they won't pay for anything when it comes to cancer, and we all know that cancer is HUGE in ferrets. They partially cover their yearly visits and really the only thing they are good for is if someone gets poisoned or breaks a leg. One of the customer service representatives told me they really only cover "accidents" for ferrets. I decided that it wasn't worth the cost. From what I've heard from my vet, it doesn't seem like any of the pet insurance companies are really wanting to support ferrets at all. :(

Karat Needs a New Home
My husband and I are down to 3 fuzzies and two of them are quite old. We call them our little geriatric kids. Karet, however is only about 4 years old. We have decided that with 4 dogs and a human baby on the way that we will not be adopting any more fuzzies for the time being (hopefully that will change in a few years). We would hate for Karet to not have any playmates once our other two pass on so we are in the process of trying to find him a new home. We don't know many people that have fuzzies and those that we do know have their fair share right now. So we are wondering if you could possibly help us out with locating a home for Karet where there is at least one other ferret or we may even consider him being a singleton if his new parents have ample time to spend with him.
If you are interested in adopting Karat please send me an email and I will forward them to his current owner

Happy Thanksgiving! (Well, almost!)
I love that photo. It is off Darlene C's Facebook page. Is that a really large ferret or has this been Photoshopped?
Like other holidays, Thanksgiving means a lot of comings and goings so keep the ferrets safe. I hate the "my ferret got out" calls we tend to get after almost every major holiday where people are coming and going, and doors tend to be left open more often than usual. Guard your ferrets!

Wysong Promises Help, Evo Has Problems
I received a call from Mark at Wysong who says they want to help fund the Environmental Impact Report. It appears we can expect a cash contribution and an affinity program where a certain percentage of sales sold off CLIFFNotes and our two websites (ferretsanon.com and LegalizeFerrets.org) will go towards paying off the EIR.
|
Established in 1979, Wysong Corporation is one of the true pioneers of natural pet foods and holistic pet health care & nutrition. Conceived and led by Dr. Wysong, we are a family company that puts principle ahead of market. From their website. They make dog food, cat food & ferret food. |
Currently Marshall Ferrets and Ferret Depot have donated money for the Environmental Impact Report. I just wish Wysong ferret foods were available at Ferret Depot - it would save on the shipping costs, but Mark said to expect some great coupons to help deal with that! - We will definitely publish the coupons - we support those who support us!
Natura Pets, the makers of Evo was another matter. I fear we added to the burdens of Erik Acaba, who I thought was their public relations man. He seems not only offended but hurt at what was sent his way after he unsubscribed from CLIFFNotes. It certainly wasn't our intention to make anyone's life harder.
To be honest the whole thing bothers me. I know about getting criticism. A company like Evo should take what is said to them as an opportunity to connect with their customers. Customers who take time to tell you what is on their mind are very valuable. I'm afraid Evo missed that opportunity, and may continue to miss out on future opportunities as well.
Marshall Ferrets Offers Us More Help
I'm very excited that we will have access to Marshall Ferret's veterinarian - someone who looks over 50,000 + ferrets and more ferret veterinary experience than anyone to answer questions from CLIFFNotes readers. The first question has been submitted. But if you have a question please send it it in. Besides health issues we are going to try behavior issues as well.
Don't You Dare Forget My Birthday Party - I'm Expecting Twins!

Better than the Neimen Marcus catalog, a ferret color chart! |
My birthday is Sunday, Dec 27th and as you may have heard I usually get cheated out of birthdays. If your birthday is near Christmas - you know what I mean!
So this year to celebrate surviving another year of the recession and my own business starting to grow - I decided to go to Las Vegas and pick up a baby ferret. I made arrangements for one ferret, but whaddya know - Marshall Ferrets won't ship a lone ferret, there will be two waiting for me.
You might also remember that I had to sell my soul to get permission to have another ferret in the house. So I was surprised why my partner wouldn't allow me to find a home for the second ferret. I don't know what that means, I'm not going to ask (you know where I'm going with this).
The party is in La Mesa at my house - so I'm not publishing the address. I will give it out to CLIFFNotes readers who respond.
3 to 6 pm, we are bringing in Philipino food and red velvet cake. No presents for me, but if you'd like to bring a donation to Linda Soule's ferret shelter (Costco gift cards were mentioned, any ferret supplies, donations, ??? Not hard to think of what could be useful)
Note - I have made special arrangements to have a baby ferret waiting for me. Don't drive out of state on Christmas expecting to find a baby ferret. Supply goes way down during the holidays. (And sadly, many ferrets are dumped soon thereafter by those who didn't know what they were getting into. -Good thing I've been around the block a few times!)
Lance M. edits CLIFFNotes once I'm done. He put in the line about ferrets being dumped - which I am fine with. The around the block part - ouch!
My two ferrets, on the right is Quito, I am his third known home and on the left Fausto who was found at the Lemon Grove Rehabilitation Center not far from my house.

In Conclusion
I am anxiously waiting for the second quarter of the report from Sacramento State University regarding the Environmental Impact Report. Are there feral ferrets out there hunting endangered wildlife or livestock that has escaped attention? Not likely!
Will the funds be there when the bill comes? This group has been pretty generous but it is a little scary. We are going to send out a mailer to everyone on the mailing list where we don't have an email address and try to sell memberships and calendars.
Our mailing list is still growing. We haven't had an a news article on ferrets for a long time but increasing numbers of people are signing up.
So thank you! - I think 2010 is going to be a good year for our efforts!
