KTLA Thinks Ferrets are
Wild Animals?

I wanted to draw attention to this image gallery that I found on the web site for L.A. television station, KTLA. This is a gallery of exotic pets, all very wild, and some even dangerous (piranhas, mountain lions, bobcats, wolves, scorpions). Included in the gallery is the domesticated ferret (photo #5). Furthermore, the photo shown is of a ferret flying through the air, looking quite aggressive. This is just bad all over.

I would encourage everyone to please write to KTLA and set the record straight here.

PICTURE GALLERY: Exotic House Pets

Hi Kathy - I think labeling them as exotic is ok, I wouldn't get upset.  Flying ferret?  I used to have one who liked to play trampoline.

Greetings, I was looking at our local newspaper, Redding Record Searchlight, and there was an animal costume show and someone had brought their ferret. Here is the link to the website, it was cute and thought that I would share.

Thanks,
Rina

Ferrets As Service Animals?

Hi I am in plans of moving to California and I am planning on getting a ferret. -But because of the laws there it is difficult to own one there. I thought of something that would make it hard for the state to disregard. I learned from my disabilities that if an animal is registered as a disabled service anima,l they have a level of protection from the American Disabilities Act.  Do you think that registering my ferret as such protect him? If so that could open the door for others as well....

I remember one case where the idea was rejected.  A student in Pennsylvania claimed she needed her ferret to keep her from having anxiety attacks.

From Lance - regardless of the ability of a ferret to be a service animal, the animal must not be banned in the state where they are acting as a service animal. Attempting to register a ferret as a service animal in the state of California would most certainly be met with a rejection, and could alert CDFG to your location. Please always be careful for the protection of your ferrets.

This is our little gal Bedlam.  This photo was taken the first day I brought Bedlam into our home.  She was such a beautiful little old lady.  She came to us from our local ferret shelter (Ferret Business of Georgia) as a "long term foster".  Her advanced age (over 6 for sure) and her insulinoma pretty much guaranteed that she wouldn't get adopted.

Bedlam got her name because she was discovered by a very kind lady when she woke up to find her sleeping in her bed with her.  She has no idea how this little one got in her apartment, much less her bed!  Thankfully, the lady didn't freak out at finding her house guest.   She realized that this was a domesticated animal but didn't know she was a ferret.  After animal control arrived, they called the local ferret shelter. -  Where Bedlam came from is still a mystery.

I miss our little Bedbug dearly!  We had to help her cross earlier this summer after she bravely battled insulinoma.

Another Week - Not Much New Happening

The first quarterly bill from for the Environmental Impact Report is almost paid (check is in the mail?)  We are now moving on to worrying about the second quarter of the EIR.  The second quarter report should say - the same as the first - "No wild ferrets in our jurisdiction."  Perhaps we'll then be able to build some serious momentum.  We will also get to the literature review - which should be fun debunking all the anti-ferret articles that have appeared the last many years that ferrets have been banned in California.

We asked all the remaining companies to help with the funding.  A week after the appeal went out we haven't heard anything.  While it is kind of annoying I remember all the calls I get to sponsor little league, keep kids off drugs and something with for the police department.  So I'll be patient and ever grateful to Marshall Farms and Ferret Depot who have already graciously come to our aid.

In the meantime I want to give a prominent spot to today's CLIFFNotes to the below story.
I'd be crushed if I lost four ferrets like that.  Does anyone know anything? - Can you help?

Four (4!) - Ferrets Missing in Martinez

Hi, our story is a little shocking. We owned 4 ferrets (two sables male and female who were special needs, and two whites, a male and female). We unfortunately trusted the wrong person. We needed them watched while we flea bombed our house on Sept. 29th 2009. Anyways supposedly, animal control from Martinez, CA (or someone posing as an animal control officer) went to the house and took our ferrets. They were supposed to be taken to the shelter, but never made it there. The person who took the ferrets told me she took them to a rescue, but wouldn't tell me where the shelter is or the number to contact them. Here's a photo of Tootsie and Rambo. Unfortunately we don't have photos of the other two, named Kitty and Pouncy.

"Who will care for your ferrets (or other exotic pets) if you aren't able to? Where will they go?"
There are things no one wants to think about, but responsible pet parents have too. The ferrets illegal status makes this an even more important question to answer; and even legal exotics have uncommon special needs!

There is a SOLUTION- legal documents that spell out your wishes!

Join me on the 17th, I will provide basic documents to fill out, and the instructions to make them legal. If enough people sign up, I'll even get a notary to stop by. You can make a will, a trust, special instructions, and more. You can see the docs on this website:
http://www.itsmypetslife.com/

I'm asking for a $10 donation to defray the cost of the documents (they're expensive), but I won't turn anyone away for not being able to afford it, because its so important to have these papers!!!

Please pass this along to other exotic pet owners and groups, the more the merrier.

Ferrets and the Swine Flu (H1N1)

It was confirmed that two ferrets and a cat have been diagnosed with the swine flu (H1N1). One of the ferrets has unfortunately succumbed to the illness. The cat recovered and I'm assuming the other ferret is ok. I have attached the article and I also heard it on Good Day L.A.   (a morning talk show in Los Angeles, CA).

I'm so glad they haven't renamed it the ferret flu!

Why we do it...

The pic is Creature with Turbo :)

I recently fostered an adorable little ferret I called Turbo. When she went to her forever home, her new mom told me that she thought it was a miracle that the ferret ended up with her, after all that Turbo had been through. This got me thinking.... While I won't comment on miracles, I do want to say that this is a perfect example of people working together, to make great things happen. We CAN and DO make life better for ferrets- and this is WHY we do it!

Ferrets Anonymous made this, and many other, successful rescues possible. In this case, a ferret was running across a street, when someone realized that it was a ferret, and not suppose to be outside. This nice man rescued her, then got online looking for help. He found FA, called and got Pat, who then called me, since I was in the neighborhood and could easily pick her up. I couldn't find her owners, and fostered her until Dawn from OC Ferrets found a forever home for her. Now Turbo is with her forever family, finally getting the medical care she so desperately needs, along with lots of love.

This happy outcome was made possible by FA, and all members. Without education and outreach (like the web site, phone #) this sweet ferret may not have survived her ordeal. Remember, every little bit helps! Every time we talk to people and educate them about ferrets, offer to rescue or foster, donate money to keep the web site going, or work towards legalization, we help build FA, and help all CA ferrets. A strong community is even more important in a state where ferrets are illegal, and there are no other safety nets for lost/ abandoned/ sick animals. People can, and do, make the difference!
(THANKS PAT! You made this possible!)

Cheers,
Stacey W

Ferrets Anonymous Round Up

Coming to San Diego in March!

March 20, 2010 - We have decided that San Diego will be the host city for the 2010 Ferrets Anonymous Round Up. This Annual meeting for FA is a great reason to get together with other ferret owners, vote on Board members for the coming year, and to buy great ferret items that you just can't find anywhere else. We're filling out the paperwork now, and should have the address soon to start letting everyone know to book their flights and take that extra day of vacation to make plans to travel to Southern California for the Round Up!

Too Cute To Shrink the Photo

My husband brightened my day by sending me this photo of our li'l Baxter while I was away visiting family out of state, missing my babies.  This is Baxter's way of saying "but Mom gives us a lot more gravy then that Dad!"

In Conclusion

Here is Creature's calendar page.  He's Mr September.
Wow - I didn't think I had enough material to make a CLIFFNotes this week, but here it is.  Not every week will have exciting news as we approach ferret legalization.  But it is important to grow our numbers and get these little guys legalized and taken care of (I know some people who would ask me to reverse that order!)

The ferrets from Martinez really make me mad.  Kind of like we used to say about the police - back in the '70's and 80's they had the best pot.  I know of Animal Control officers who have kept confiscated ferrets as their own pets!

So let's all work together - please join the 3000 Club if you haven't - and help with our calendar drive!

Don't forget if you are in the San Diego area - I'm throwing myself a birthday party on Sunday Dec 27th, 3 to 5 or thereabouts.  I'm going to Las Vegas on Christmas to pick up my birthday present - a baby ferret.  Baby ferrets aren't plentiful on Christmas, but I've got connections.  More info to come!
