Here's the cover for our Calendar.
Thank you to these folks for making the EIR possible
Years from now when people talk about how ferrets became legal in California, Marshall Pet Products and Ferret Depot will be mentioned as being there at the crucial moment.
5th ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE AND FERRET FROLIC DATE: SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2009 TIME: 12:00 – 4:00PM PLACE: 977 PLEASANTVIEW CT GARDNERVILLE, NV 89460 775-265-6744
Admission: $1 per person/per ferret
Hi
Just want to drop in and remind everyone that the open house is just around the corner on the 19th of Sept. It will be loads of fun watching the ferrets playing in the games and this year we have people games too.
Don't forget to bring your pictures, up to 5, for the photo contest. Attendees will be the judges. April from Performance Foods will be here and Dr. Cameron Ross from Carson Valley Vet Hospital. If you have questions, this would be the time to have them answered. Don't forget your costumes for your furry friends too.
We have more raffle items this year than in the past and we have one very special raffle item. I am not going to tell what it is, but when you get here you will fall in love with it. Renee has also sent a box of her famous biscotti all the way from Alaska.
Hope you can all attend this fund raiser for the shelter. Hugs to all the little ones and see you on the 19th.
Linda
My name is Molly and I recently moved to Los Angeles from Saint Louis Missouri to attend graduate school. Among my family pets are two dogs and a ferret. We recently moved into a house in Beverly Hills, California on Benedict Canyon Road.
The day after we moved in, our pet ferret, Lucy, escaped through a small hole in a closet and made her way into the crawl space of the house and eventually out into the neighborhood. This was last Monday, August 31st. We thought perhaps she was still under the house, in the crawl space...
On Wednesday evening there was an ad posted to craigslist saying that a small animal was found on Monday wandering the street in the 1900 block of Benedict Canyon Drive - this is just outside our door! The author of this ad said to send a description of the pet and if the description matched he would respond. We immediately replied to this ad (one and half hour later) and even sent a photograph of our pet Lucy. To our surprise, there was no response and on Saturday morning, the listing was deleted by the author. I have posted two listing on craigslist and posted some flyers, but they are removed by the city almost immediately.
Until this incident, i never knew that ferrets were illegal here and I worry also what may have happened to her if these people turned her into an animal shelter. All I can think is that they must have fallen in love with her because she is so sweet, tiny, and loving.
My instincts tell me that she was picked up by a neighbor, but so far no one has come forward with any information about her whereabouts.
The road is very busy and the likelihood of someone stopping their car to pick her up seems very odd to me. I think it is more likely that a neighbor or a pedestrian found her and now wants to keep her as their own pet. I am desperate to find my ferret, please call or email me if you think you can help.

Order Your 2010 LegalizeFerrets.org Calendar Today and help support the Environmental Impact Report!
Early Ferret Price - only $10; later goes to $12. ORDER HERE
After considerable time and effort the 2010 LegalizeFerrets.org calendar is off to the printer. Our goal is to have them ready to ship by Oct 15th.
The calendar is an 8.5 x 5.5 inches but opens up to 8.5 x 11 inches size wall-hanging style. The cover is in the upper left.
Besides showing support for ferrets and ferret legalization the calendar may prove to be a good outreach tool. The back pages tell our story and ask people to support our efforts.
A very special thanks to Heidi, our graphic artist who put considerable skill and time in this calendar and Jamie K who volunteered her photography skills. The project was a ton of fun and I look forward to working on the 2011 Calendar - and I hope 2011 will be the "Year of the Ferret." 2010 will be the Year of the EIR!
We want to sell 300 calendars this week to get this project and the EIR off the ground. You can buy more than one! Buy 10! Great Christmas or Holiday gifts. Sales figures will be updated daily on our Twitter, Facebook and http://www.ferretsanon.com/ page - look for the "What's Hot" in the upper left hand corner. |
Update on the EIR
 |
| This is the meanest looking ferret I could find on the Internet. Still looks like a teddy bear to me. Not exactly the blood sucker portrayed in the article. BUT - I wouldn't put him with an infant! | Dr Graening informed me surveys will go out to the 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces this week. There was a problem of a lot of states saying they don't deal with ferrets because it is not considered an issue or it is handled by a different state issue (and yet in California, ferret suck blood - it's in the article mentioned below). The goal is to document what kind of environmental and health issues ferrets have had in the rest of the US and Canada.
Besides surveying the states and provinces a literature review will take place. Dr Graening dug up this piece which I was not familiar with.
OUTDOOR CALIFORNIA MARCH-APRIL 1991
A PUBLICATION OF THE CALIFORNIA RESOURCES AGENCY
I might remember this incident. As I recall a German Sheppard dog and a domestic ferret were both in the house running loose when the infant was killed. It seemed at the time that DFG was blaming the ferret before the investigation was completed. Does anyone have the details of this terrible incident?
Monterey Bay Ferrets Has A New Website

Monterey Bay Ferrets has a new web page. I would like to invite you to take a look. Keep up dated on the happenings of your local ferret group. Thank you for taking a look.

Bosco Update
$427 was raised last week to cover Bosco's vet bill. Bosco was a ferret who belonged to a woman who lost her husband and her cat this year. Bosco had an obstruction and was expected to survivle. Turns out he didn't but the donations and support helped the owner get through a difficult time. Thank you to everyone who contributed - I hope some good karma is coming your way.
In Conclusion
This is an exciting week for California ferret enthusiasts. The first part of the wildlife study, the basis for the official EIR when we file it goes out the door this week. And, can we sell 300 Calendars this week? That's the amount we need to sell in order to cover the cost of printing 2,500 of them. We still have to pay Heidi, our graphic artist. Poor Heidi has spent a lot of time on this calendar with countless revisions. It is a good thing she discounts for non-profits. But we have a bang up calendar I hope will be in demand. I'm kind of looking forward to doing one for 2011 - the year ferrets will become legal. And then I retire!
We learned who our friends are. It was quite disapointing that most companies wouldn't even answer our appeal for funds. But Marshall Pet Products and Ferret Depot came through like champions. So I hope everyone who reads CLIFFNotes will support them in return.
And how ridiculous is this whole thing? We have to go back to the last millenium for a supposed severe ferret attack. This caught my eye in this morning's Parade magazine:
Can't you just imagine an article after ferrets are legal in California - "Preventing Fatal Ferret Attacks? - only if it is in a Mountain Dew Commercial!
Thank you everyone - and order your calendars!
