Calendar Choice Made

Thank you everyone who voted for their choices.  Based on the emails that came in, here is the design given to our graphic artist.

Ferret Model Needed

I am searching for a ferret to photograph for a magazine editorial on them (a positive article). I need to do "basic" portraits (ferret full body, head shots, playing, etc) I am in the North Bay, CA (I have a studio here but can travel in the Bay Area too). I am happy to trade out some of the pictures for your time/willingness.
Your anonymity is ABSOLUTELY respected and guaranteed.

Joe Ferret

Hello,
My name is Ana R. I'm 15 years old and entering my sophomore year at AB Miller High. I've been what you would call a "ferret fan" since I've heard about them. I've read books about them and already have a wide range knowledge of ferrets, including their illegal status in California. That sucks because I live in California. Lately, I've spread ferret awareness to my family and friends and they too have begun to support the cause. Even my mom wants to smuggle a ferret from Arizona, but I refused to have one while they're illegal. As much as I love them, I'd rather not put a ferret in danger and have it live under the dark shadow of the law. It angers me when ferrets are put down (it's murder but the government doesn't want to make it sound bad) when they're caught.
On June 7th, 2009 I wrote a two-page letter to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger about that issue. About two months later, I received a reply. I was disappointed for the reply wasn't much help. I want to be a part of this cause and help as much as I can. What can I do to spread ferret awareness or help in any way?
-Ana R

Hello Ana -
Welcome to CLIFFNotes and thanks for your letter!  We haven't seen a ferret put down in years - we simply would not allow it.  But it is time this stupid ban is overturned and I appreciate yours, and everyone else's getting on board.  For some reason people signing up for CLIFFNotes has increased to about 40 a week.

Thanks J for sending it in!

LOL Over Ferret Poop Request

And a big LOL on the lady who wants ferret poo... we had a real good laugh with that one; although, now I know my mom is going to be asking me for ours since she has a rat problem.  Hey, we are more than happy to give it away :)  Wonder if we could post an ad on Craigslist, sort of like the ones for firewood, "You Haul"  LOL LOL

Update on the Environmental Impact Report
Dr Geo Graening, the independent consultant we hired to perform the initial study, prior to the EIR which will be used as the basis of our EIR has designed a rough draft of the survey.  It eerily resembles the first one done by Ron Jurek of the Department of Fish and Game - and if you haven't seen that one, click here.

Two things concern me here.  First, mere speculation seems to have credibility at the Department of Fish and Game.  Our own DFG has reported feral ferrets breeding in Alaska in the middle of winter, as well as the destruction of a colony of terns in Massachusetts by domestic ferrets.  No documentation was ever provided to prove these claims.  I hope that if they are going to claim such events, they would attempt to back them up, which of course they won't be able to.

Also, there are wild ferrets in a few states, but these are mustela nigripes, also known as black footed ferrets, which are both endangered and wild - not our pets.

As For the Funding

This first step is going to cost us about $13,000.  Letters went out to 17 corporations and/or organizations and so far we have only heard from one.

Most disappointing for me, is the silence from Petco.  We sent them $25,000 in Petco store receipts to give our message a little more clout. Three weeks later, we haven't heard a word from them.

But Marshall Pet Products did call and say they are going to try to cover 25% of the expense and see if they can get Marshall Ferrets to match it!  In addition, they are going to bend the ear of Petco Corporate.  A very sincere "thank you" seems inadequate for such a wonderful gesture from Marshall Pet Products!
Our Calendar is Coming Along - But We Still Need Help!

The photos have been taken but we are still lacking in two areas -
We want soulful stories - how has the ferret ban affected you?  So far there are two stories about moving to California for jobs, one person moved and another person didn't.  But what other stories are out there?  Please send them in along with a photo.  You can see Matt's little blurb and photo in the calendar example to the left.

12 Things You Might Not Know About Your Ferre
t
- we still have to refine this list: (it needs to go down to 12)

  1. The Massachusetts Colonial Navy, which was organized on December 29, 1775, was reactivated in 1967 and in 1986 proclaimed the ferret its official mascot.
  2. During the early 1900's there was a town (New London, Ohio) which was known as Ferretville because of all the large scale ferret breeders which were located there.
  3. If an unsterilized female comes into heat, she will stay in heat indefinitely and during this period, her estrogen levels will remain high and be very toxic to her bone marrow. This can be fatal to your ferret.
  4. There is a rumor that ferrets ran video cabling for the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles
  5. The male ferret or Hob's breeding season is in the early spring and summer when the testicles enlarge and descend into the scrotum, the rest of the year the testicles are out of sight. If a hob is trying to breed and the testicles have not descended, the sperm will be infertile
  6. Up until 1985 the California Department of Fish and Game would issue permits for neutered male ferrets
  7. 80% of the ferrets sold in pet stores in Arizona, Nevada and Oregon are brought to California, the loss of sales tax revenue to the state of California is between $700,000 and $2,700,000 each year
  8. There is no good estimate of the number of ferrets in California, but according to PIJAC, the leading pet trade organization, Californians buy 27% of the nation’s stock of ferret supplies
  9. Ferrets are thought to have been domesticated 2,500 years ago but we don’t know who their wild ancestors were.  A recent discovery in the southwest of Europe have uncovered skeletons of ferrets dating back to 1600 years B.C. But at that time there were no rabbits, so they must have used them for mice control.
  10. Leonardo da Vinci’s paint, Lady with an Ermine (1489) is in fact a ferret. Europeans of that era preferred white ferrets because of the ease of seeing the white animal in thick undergrowth
  11. Ferrets seldom cause allergies. People who are generally allergic to cats and dogs don't usually have problems with ferrets.
  12. Ferrets are legal in 48 states and no other state required an Environmental Impact Report prior to legalizing them.
  13. According to the Centers for Disease Control, only the guinea pig is a safer pet than ferrets Ferrets were the #3 most popular pet in the US (right there behind cats & dogs which flip flop the #1 & #2 spot).
  14. In the early 1900's, the U S Department of Agriculture issued a farm bulletin advising farmers to use ferrets for rodent extermination in grain storage.
15 Ferrets have been used in the White House to eliminate a rat problem. In 1889, Caroline Harrison, wife of President Benjamin Harrison, brought in an army of ferrets to eliminate the hordes of rats.

We still need photos and stories from people who have been affected by the ferret ban?  Isn't there someone out there who has faced the moral dilemma of teaching their kids to break the law just to keep the ferret?  Foster parents and day care centers that have to hide ferrets.  I know there are a million stories in the tarnished stated.

Lolabee Makes it to Nevada - But What A Hassle!

After a few false starts Lolabee was allowed to leave San Diego animal control.  It appears one person at Animal Control didn't like us and we were told  they were getting nasty emails from people about Lo. For this reason, AC is not going to release Lo to Linda Soule (shelter director in Nevada)  while she’s in CA, however they did say that a courier will deliver Lo to her at the rescue in NV.

But then this was forwarded to us:

"Actually, we didn’t get as much hate-mail as expected. I think most people (once the facts are explained) understand the position we are in with regards to ferrets. We never go looking for them and the occasional one that gets loose is lucky if we get the call as much worse happens to them left on their own.

Thank you again. And keep the ferret(s) that you don’t have off the radar!

Sincerely,

Dawn D. Danielson, RVT, Director
County of San Diego
Department of Animal Services

Vet Directory Updated - A Bit

I finally got around to mailing out 300 letters and 1800 membership cards to everyone on our vet list asking for their complete info.  So far fewer than a dozen have responded.  If we don't have the phone number on your vet, (or if we missed a vet who treats ferrets in California)  please let me know.  Check out the page at http://www.ferretsanon.com/vets.php

Next step, redo the whole San Diego Ferrets Anonymous website.

Ginger Needs A New Home

Ginger currently residing in San Diego's Talmadge area needs a new home.  The current owner says she like other ferrets to play with but she didn't along with a ferret she was recently placed with.  Also a bite incident was hinted at (We hope she doesn't end up at the San Diego Animal Shelter!)  If you are interested please write a little about yourself and I will forward you info on.  Don't wait a week, ferrets go pretty quickly.

In Conclusion

Interest in LegalizeFerrets has spiked up a bit.  I have received a few emails of "How can I help?"  which I really love.  Most of the times it is "Where can I get a ferret?"

I take this to mean we are gaining credibility and momentum.  I'm a little concerned that DFG won't play nice regarding the EIR, but as I said we have nothing to fear from the truth.  We're going to jump through this hoop and demand legalization!

There is some question about an FA chapter in Sacramento - Is there still an active group?  Sacramento has a lot of ferret owners (I can tell when I place Craigslist ads) We need to get a chapter going up there - whadaya say, Lance?

Reply from Lance M.
- All any group needs to do to start a chapter of Ferrets Anonymous is to inform the President of their intentions and work with the President and the FA Board to set up that chapter and uphold the bylaws of FA - that I will provide them with.. There are plenty of tips I can also provide to anyone interested in starting a ferret club and chapter of FA - just let me know!
