Lolabee the ferret, aka "Lo" to her friends, is sitting in the Gaines Street Animal Shelter. She was found in an apartment hallway and was turned into Animal Control.
The situation was posted on Joe Ferret's Facebook page and Rebecca S. came to the rescue. She dug up the mysterious Code 2189 of the DFG Code, where it basically states that once an owner claims the ferret, they CAN send it to the home of their choice. (More details on this code in the next issue).
San Diego Animal Control is now demanding a "bonded carrier" to drive "Lo" to Yuma, AZ. The problem is, there is no such thing as a bonded carrier. I have used Knox Attorney Service when I had this problem in the past, but if anyone can help, please contact Rebecca at memoriesx1904@gmail.com
It's been a week of headaches and problems. You may notice we aren't using ConstantContact. Why? Well, we were fired! There were too many spam complaints from my message about the counterfeit check. -D'oh! -Guess I should have used the CLIFFNotes email account. Then last week, I got what is known as the "Blue Screen of Death" on my computer - and I hadn't backed up the data. But anyway, picking things up, a new hard drive has been installed, and everything is now backed up (thanks to Darryl!) - We are ready to go again!
Unhappy About Last Week's CLIFFNotes
Its not a good sign when the person hired to perform the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has complaints about how things were worded. "Its not accurate or well written" I was told. There was an objection to giving too much information "And there is still an institutional memory at CDFG of previous dealings with ferret special interest groups."
DFG is not our partner in this study I was told, but from what I understand they are the lead agency and will/do play an active part. The comments about an "institutional memory" are the most worrisome because it placed doubt to whether DFG really wants the truth or not, that instead they want to maintain the status quo.
I am a strong believer that we have nothing to hide. They will not find any potential hazards in regards to ferret legalization. The Truth Will Set Us Free. As far as I'm concerned this part is purely bureaucratic, we're just doing what is required of us for them to consider legalization.
If after the study is done as required and we are treated unfairly, then our grass roots activism will really pay off. Until then, we will work to word things more correctly, and keep pushing towards our goals.
About Funding the EIR A request to Petco, along with $25,000 in Petco receipts was sent out nearly two weeks ago. We asked them for a $10,000 donation to go towards funding the EIR. If they come through, we will love Petco and I know everyone reading this newsletter will be shopping at Petco for years to come. (Plus, they're the only local pet shop that carries N-Bones, so we have no choice - the ferrets want their treats!)
16 other letters went out on Thursday by Priority Mail. We asked them to contact us regarding funding the first part of the EIR where we need $13,000. Everyone got all the supporting paperwork. - These are the people we asked, if we left anyone out, please contact me:
California Veterinary Medical Assoc Drs. Foster And Smith Eight In One Pet Products Ferret Depot Ferret.com Marshall Pet Products Mazuri Corp
Natura Pet Products Inc. Path Valley Farm Performance Foods Inc PetSmart Pijac Pretty Bird International Inc Zupreme
You will be notified about who supports our efforts, and I hope you will, in turn - strongly support them! Calendar Options
Heidi, our graphic artist has put together three options for our calendar. Please send me an email as to which one you prefer. I promised Heidi an answer on Wednesday morning so she can get it done and we can start a presale.
From left to right, options 1, 2 and 3 - which do you prefer? The inset picture is of Matt J., with a blurb about how the ferret ban has affected him. Matt's ferrets were left behind in Michigan when he accepted a job offer in California. We still need those personalizations - its adds soul to the calendar. Please send in your brief story and photo, you could be on our calendar as well.
Those companies who donate towards the EIR are also going to get some real estate on the calendar. And I'd like to put a little ferret fact on every months, along the lines of "12 things you might now know about your ferret." Anyone have a fun or unusual fact to contribute. This week I will send a letter to everyone on our vet list and ask for contributions as well.
Thank you Heidi for an outstanding job! Jewels For Ferrets!

LegalizeFerrets.org KeyChain
One of the graphic specialty companies called me a few weeks back with keychains on clearance. This was the best telemarketer I've ever come across. As a result...
For only $4 you can have your very own LegalizeFerrets.org keychain, complete with two great lights. They are kind of handy!
I used to live in California and was a happy owner of little fuzzies. I currently live in New Zealand where ferrets are
I found this video which shows the difference between our pets and the European polecat. DFG seems to think they are one in the same
not pets, but have a kill on sight order much to my dismay.
I noticed that CA Fish and Game use the example of the NZ Ferret population as a reason not to legalize the ferret in CA. I was wondering how this unseemly correlation was being addressed by F & G and the pro ferret side?
It seems that the issues of NZ ferrets and CA ferrets are different. Ferrets were released in NZ wildlife on purpose to address the rabbit population. Also, during economic downturns, Ferret Farm owners released their 'product' into the wild again, adding to the issue of a feral ferret population. In CA, I doubt anyone will release a de-sexed ferret into the wild because they are a bit used to being pampered and loved.
It seems to me that NZ went a bit extreme because they outlawed the pet ownership of this critter without taking into consideration responsible pet ownership (as similar to dogs and cats), such as desexing, health shots etc, which protects the ferrets and the people population. There are many feral cat populations within the city I live in, with people who continue to feed the feral cats. I've only ran across one couple who actually trap and desex the cats on their own dime, to reduce the population - like a responsible person should.
Just wondering...thanks. Ferrets Needing A New Home
Hello. I was wondering if you could provide me with some information regarding adoption for my two ferrets. I am currently living with my parents in the Los Angeles area and they are threatening to get rid of them. I'm afraid that I'll come home one day and they won't be here. I rescued both of them when my friend found them in her backyard. I have had them for two years. I am not sure of their exact age but they were both adults when I got them. I'm guessing they are 3-4 years old but I am not certain. They are both healthy and have their shots. Email mailto:mebitejoo@verizon.net for more info.
HHH Passes Away
Hairy Harry Henderson, loved and cherished by Lance & Dawn M. passed away today at fours years of age. Harry's photo has been in Cliff Notes before. He was a beautiful Angora ferret that came into their lives exactly two years ago by way of a ferret shelter in Ohio. His parents always hoped that he could be a spokes-ferret for ferret welfare after ferrets became legalized in California. Unfortunately, Harry had other plans.
Be Careful of What You Ask For - Letter From Clairemont Mesa
Hi, I am looking to connect with ferret owners. Now please don't choke when I tell you why. This is for real. I'm not putting you on. I want some ferret feces. Ferret feces repels rodents. The mice seem to be coming up from my canyon. My 12 year old cat, Dream Kitty, has decided to retire from mousing & is mean to other cats. Could you please forward my email to someone who would be open to recycling their ferret feces? I'm in Clairemont Mesa. BTW, I used to raise rabbits. I used to give the rabbit droppings to the all my gardening neighbors. mailto:caringpro@yahoo.com In Conclusion
How nice to be back on my own computer with everything working.
And how great to see our calendar coming along. Don't forget to tell me which design you prefer. The design I pick as my favorite are always dead last, so I appreciate your help!
Lance M. is coming back as co-editor, Yeah! But it isn't as easy as it looks. Lance and I have different opinions on how things work and to get CLIFFNotes out every week isn't easy (though usually enjoyable). I have never been able to keep a secret, I think everything should always be out in the open - and it has often gotten me in trouble.
We appreciate other help, submissions etc to make CLIFFNotes meaningful. Paging Sarah Gonzales!
As for that counterfeit check. Last week I sent out on the CLIFFNotes an email about a counterfeit check I received. I'm not out any money it was just something about a data entry job. I think you're supposed to keep track how much money you'd be out with these crooks.
I have a little intelligence and I called the supposed issuer of the check who informed me their account had been compromised and thus closed. So I called my local police department who said it was ok to issue counterfeit checks as long as no one cashed them. Since I didn't cash the check, no victim, no crime. - What?
I later learned the Secret Service is in charge of things, I spoke to them and sent them the whole packet.
That frustrated me, so I sent an email to the CLIFFNotes list using my personal email account dsrj@cox.net. About 30 people marked it as spam and Constant Contact closed the account late Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, it was already too late to set up another account with another company but I do have this EmailBrain account still - so I hope it works!
