Making Progress on the EIR - Using Good Science
& Statistics in the Battle for Legalization

California ferret legalization proponents have taken the first step in preparing the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that Governor Schwarzenegger said was needed before he would consider any sort of legalization of the domestic ferret.  (he also said as a candidate for Governor that he would sign any ferret legalization bill that passed his desk, but ended up vetoing a bill which makes us wonder about his sincerity.)

Also, the California Domestic Ferret Educational Alliance has filed its paperwork with the IRS to become an official 501(c) 3 organization (Ferrets Anonymous, which we are a part of is a 501 (c) 4 organization - and as such, donations to FA are not tax deductible).  We are hoping for official non-profit status in the next few weeks.  That way our anonymous donor and all future donors can be assured that their donations are tax deductable.

There is a lot I can't tell you - which is killing me, because I love to the bearer of goos news. I am happy to report however, that I have had nothing to do with this effort.  Other people are doing all the work which means unlike previous ferret legalization efforts, this is not a one person show.  - And they are doing a fantastic job.

I can't emphasize enough - this is a very exciting time for us because we are finally on the right track and have the resources and people to make this happen.  In the weeks ahead look forward to reports as we complete the process of having a full-blown EIR done that may get our little guys legalized.

Changes Eminent at Ferrets Anonymous

The State FA is having their Annual Round Up on Saturday,  March 29, 2008.
Here are the details from their website:
12 Moose Way
1020 11th Street
Pitsburg, CA
916-498-9800
Doors Open At 10:30 a.m.
$10.00 Entrance Fee

Guest Speakers:
Rene Gandolfi, DVM
Donna Holstein, Missing Animal Response
Leatherface, Actor
Ferret Advocate,
Lance M

It does appear that Lance M will run for the presidency of FA and a whole new board will be serving.  Perhaps the state FA will be more proactive in working for legalization.  Unlike the ballot initiative that we were originally formed to promote, I haven't heard any ferret people opposed to doing an EIR.

And Changes in the San Diego Ferrets Anonymous

We need to have a meeting to elect officers and get reacquainted.  We have a lead at one meeting space, hopefully we can announce a date next week.  Or perhaps we can have a picnic at a local park.

The website we manage, www.ferretsanon.com has gone through a revision.  I did spend $90 on technical support.  I'm still working on changes but it has been pretty successful getting people to sign up for this newsletter and it ranks fairly high on Google, plus we spend about $50 a month on Google Adwords.
I also have a ferret blog prominently linked on the main page - http://californiaferret.blogspot.com/
Look forward to new artwork coming soon, that's unlike anything we've done before. The theme? "Ferrets Are More Fun".

A Note from Lance M from Orange County Ferrets:
I hope everyone who reads CLIFFNotes, and considers themselves also a member of Ferrets Anonymous, will take a proactive role and attend the Ferrets Anonymous Round Up on the last Saturday of next month. There has been a massive drive to unite ferret enthusiasts in the Orange County, San Diego and San Bernardino areas over the past 6-8 months. I hope to see this unification continue, and everyone's voice must be heard. With a fresh Board of Ferrets Anonymous, as well as groups like the CDFEA that will serve to further educate the public about the pros and cons of domestic ferrets, the only direction we can go is forward. Please email me at info@ocferrets.orgif you have any questions, I'd love to speak with you!

In Conclusion...
I'm happy to report that last week's CLIFFNotes was the most read ever - so far 601 people we know of opened it.  We are in good shape because we know what we want (legalization), we agree on what we need to do (EIR, plus we have the resources, no small detail!) and interest is growing in terms of sign ups and people actually opening this email. Only a few months ago I fretted over not having goals or direction.

So keep the faith and thank you for continuing to support LegalizeFerrets.org
