“Next Steps” towards Ferret Legalization:  How YOU Can Help

Last Monday the “brain team” behind LegalizeFerret.org discussed the goals and “next steps” towards the EIR. Here are the NEXT STEPS, and you can HELP:

California is relying on OLD INFORMATION to support its current position on Ferrets.  This information is being examined, critiqued, and updated.  To do this our team is surveying jurisdictions across the US and elsewhere.  Several experts will review our reviewing the issues and will provide their input.

Next the so-called “scientific” evidence keeping ferrets “banned” is being scrutinized.  Again, we are relying both on the expertise of our “brain team” as well as outside experts.

Do you have expertise in PUBLIC HEALTH, STATISTICS, DATABASE DEVELOPMENT, EPIDEMIOLOGY, or WILDLIFE BIOLOGY?   We need your assistance to complete these steps.   Please contact Pat at CLIFFNotes@legalizeferrets.org .

Also in the “works” is a new nonprofit (“501c3”) organization.   The new organization will be known as California Domestic Ferret Educational Alliance.   It will collect and develop up-to-date information for the public education on the domestic ferret.  Such information can be used to support any future legislative (new laws or regulations) or administrative (EIRs) activities that are needed to turn the tide of the Ferret Legalization in California. One individual has come forward to donate funds for these efforts.  However, we plan to go after “matching funds”.  We will be a DONOR PROGRAM, and will reach out to the public.  Will you help?

Note: Ferrets Anonymous (and LegalizeFerrets.org is part of the San Diego Chapter of Ferrets Anonymous) was set up as a 501c4 because we wanted to be political.  The downside is donations to us are not tax deductible.  It is fortunate we have a ferret organization based on education, not politics, to manage donations.

We need VOLUNTEERS to work on the nonprofit organization – folks who do WEBSITES, ARTWORK, MARKETING, PUBLIC RELATIONS, FUNDRAISING, and ACCOUNTING.   Expertise is need in all of these areas.

So if you have expertise or know someone who is willing to DONATE TIME to this project, please contact Bonnie at ferretzrule@yahoo.com.

Now is the time YOU CAN HELP!

A Tale of Two Ferrets

Madelyn Casarez of Imperial Beach was walking her five year old ferret Cody on December 20th and was approached by police.  The next day an Animal Control officer and two sherrif deputies knocked on her door and demanded Cody (They did not have a warrant, Madelyn should have asked them to return with a warrant) Unlucky for Madelyn, the police officer was a former Animal Control officer and thought she would protect the vulnerable residents of Imperial Beach from a five year old ferret.

Madelyn called me (crying) to see if I knew the status of Cody.  She was told by Animal Control officer Claudia Jiminez that Cody would be taken out of state (the transfer date was January 12th but there was no documentation) but Madelyn would never know any details. As far as I know, there is no authorized feret rescue in California.  Does anyone know different?

The Carlsbad ferret mentioned in last week's CLIFFNotes may have been returned to the owner by that city's Animal Control.  They did send the owner a letter to come pick up the ferret.  One difference is the Carlsbad ferret is owned by a doctor, someone who has an attorney on staff.
Help Needed in Humboldt

Hi, I go to HSU and I am writing an article on ferrets and I was wondering if anybody living in the Humboldt area could answer a few simple question on the matter. If you are worried about legalities and getting tracked down by the department of fish and game (which from my research is highly unlikely) I can omit your last name. I have a ferret and my name will be on the byline My phone number is 707-362-1169 Please call or e-mail me ASAP

New Ferret Club Trying To Form in Redondo Beach

Jerry T is trying to get a new Ferrets Anonymous chapter set up in the Redondo Beach area.  If you can help get it off the ground, please email Jerry at taxter@roadrunner.com

Ask Oprah

I got this idea so I wanted to see what you think. I wrote to Oprah asking her to get behind us in our cause. What if we all flooded her with this request? If she got behind us it could have a huge impact. You can go to http://www.oprah.com and join her club and send in your story. I did it.
Virginia

Thanks Virginia.  I know people have done this in the past.  But remember national pet columnist Steve Dale?  He told us that non-Californians can't understand this.

Thanks for the Plug

I saw this graphic on http://www.lovingferrets.com/ and it made me smile.

The www.legalizeferrets.org website is in need of revision. Would anyone like to take on project of website copywriter?

We are trying to get a new art project off the ground on the theme "ferrets are more fun" I hope our artist will have some proofs soon.

The San Diego Ferrets Anonymous website, www.ferretsanon.com- please don't confuse it with the state FA website, www.ferretsanonymous.comwill get an update and facelift this week.

Please join the 3000 Club if you aren't already a member.  Feel free to donate.  I am a little concerned that people think this big donation is coming our way and they don't want to send in $10.  We still need all those donations - feel free to click here to send a donation our way.

We also need to have a meeting of the San Diego Chapter of Ferrets Anonymous to elect officers and just get together.  Does anyone have a meeting location in mind?

Thank you,

P.S. Don't forget to send in photos and videos for next week's CLIFFNotes!
