It is a distressing to read about another real life situation where an otherwise law abiding (and tax paying!) citizen of our state had to deal with the frightening reality of the legal status of the domestic ferret in California.

If the information contained in the letter is completely true, it is also distressing that any of my colleagues who deliver veterinary services would a) be so completely unfamiliar with ferret medicine that he/she would blame adrenal disease in this species on a simple lack of Melatonin and not explain the more complex nature of the development of this condition, and b) extort a pet owner with an inflated fee for surgery because the pet was "illegal".

Frankly, if performed correctly, surgery for an adrenal tumor, and the medical care before, during, and afterward can, and often does cost as much or more than
$1500. It's not like opening the back of a cell phone to change the battery and anyone who approaches it with this attitude does no one, especially the poor little creature, any good.

There are many competent and honest veterinarians who can provide care for ferrets. Readers of Cliffnotes should all be aware of the resources at their fingertips, that is, to contact FA for a referral to one of these "ferret-friendly" veterinarians.

On September 17th I chose to put my ferret to sleep due to a diagnosis of insulinoma.

I went looking for him when he wasn't at my feet with his wet cold nose looking for his morning treat of FerretVite.  I found him alive, but barely.  His blood sugar was so low and the doctor said it was probably insulinoma.

Jimminey gave me 7 years of laughs, happiness, and so much more.  I miss him terribly.  Ferrets are the best pets!

Here is to everyone who has lost a beloved ferret.... (click here)

The Road to Ferret Legalization Goes Through San Diego on October 11th

The third annual Legalize Ferrets Revival promises to be an historic event because it should launch our Environmental Impact Report. Among the speakers will be Dr Geo Graening of Natural Investigations. Dr Graening's talk is probably the most important talk ever given to a California ferret event because after he is finished we will know if we are going to file an Environmental Impact Report or not.

We are having Dr Graening's talk videotaped professionally. The talk will then be placed on our websites. But wouldn't you rather be there in person for this meaningful event? We are also going to try to get the news media to cover this event. If you have any contacts in the press, please feel free to pass them along or put in a good word for us.

Other speakers include:

Professional motivational speaker Milo Shapiro. Milo won't be talking about building your sales quota - he'll show us the joy of communicating effectively and being a team.
Leading ferret vet Dr Jeff Jenkins. Expect some cutting edge ferret veterinary advice.
FA President Lance M, fresh off the first ferret legalization motorcycle ride, will talk about his first six months as president of FA. Does he have any regrets?
Local candidates for state assembly and state senate have also been invited. One has committed (Ralph Denney) and another (Derrick Roach) has expressed interest in attending. We are giving them 5 to 10 minutes to introduce themselves, that is what a participatory democracy is all about!

Reserve Before October 1st - Prices Go Up

Candidate Survey in Process

My thanks to Judy K for helping to send out 271 letters to everyone running for state assembly and state senate asking if they would vote for or sponsor a bill to legalize ferrets next year. The letters went out by email where we had an email address, and everyone on the list was sent a snail mail letter. 17 responses have already come in by email. I will update the list as the letters come in. See the upper left for links to our websites.

Update on Clifford Bill

Cliff, the ferret in distress two weeks ago, after being a squeaky toy for two dogs is happily adjusting to his new home. I thought Rebecca, the new owner was sending me a new photo, "Clifford Bill" - I thought "Bill" is certainly an unusual name for a ferret, but it wasn't that type of bill, another invoice.

$472 came in for his bill from last week's CLIFFNotes and appeal on the web site. Another invoice was presented for $140. We can pay another $50 from money collected, leaving a balance of $90.

Rebecaa also provided this update:

He started eating some dry food last night, which is great, but he hasn't quite gotten off of his duck soup. The use of his leg hasn't really progressed too much. He's still moving it, and he can feel pain in his feet, so they're thinking it's just going to be a long healing process for him.

I think "Bill" is a good middle name for this ferret. If you'd like to help pay the Bill part down, we are still accepting donations at: (of if the Paypal link doesn't work, please go to http://www.legalizeferrets.org/donations.htm and let me know it is for Cliff.

Ferret Legalization Ride - Next Saturday!

OCFerrets & San Diego Ferrets Anonymous are holding the first ever Ferret Legalization Ride in El Cajon next Saturday. Come ride with us to raise funds for ferret education. In Conclusion

Exciting times are ahead for California ferret owners. It seems the past 15 years were so full of disappointment. But on October 11th we may finally be on the right path.

I am a little nervous about attendance. I hope we get a lot of people and enthusiasm.

Then there is that little part of paying for the EIR. While we previously had someone who had pledged the money, we've waited so long now - that I'm afraid her enthusiasm has diminished. But we have more members and now corporate friends. I'm not shy, I will be asking everyone I can think of to help pay for the EIR if need be. We will probably need $10,000 to get started.

In the meantime, thanks for your support. If you aren't a member of the 3000 Club, please join. It helps keep us funded and shows real growth.
