Quick Legalization Update
Candidate Survey Going Out
Two items pertaining to ferret legalization. The California Secretary of State's office is releasing the list of candidates on August 28th. We are sending every candidate for state assembly and state senate a survey to find ferret legalization sponsors for 2009. We did this a long time ago and didn't get many answers then. In fact a lot of candidates thought it was a joke; either they didn't know ferrets were illegal or they didn't think anyone would care. I hope the survey, in conjunction with the Environmental Impact Report will be taken seriously.
Don't Forget the Legalize Ferrets Revival III
Mark your calendar for October 11th and join us. Full details are at http://www.ferretsanon.com/revival3.html. We will have a flyer in the mail to about 2500 people - thanks to the same volunteer. We are hoping for 75 to 100 participants.
Help Mary with Her Ferret Book!
Please remind the CLIFFNotes readers that I need stories (and photos) regarding their ferrets and why they are willing to defy state laws to keep them. Remind them that everything that I receive is confidential and will not be released to anyone without their expressed permission. This includes their names and locations in California. I feel very strongly about guarding their privacy. I have received four letters and I notice that 2 of them were also printed in the current copy of CLIFFNotes. I really would like this information as soon as possible so I can get down to business in writing the story of California vs. the Ferrets!! (There currently is no title for the book, but I am up for suggestions if anybody has one!!).
My wish is that the book will be done before the end of the year. So please remind the readers to get out the pen and paper (or the ol’ computer) and start writing those stories!! And to please include clear photos of their babies too!! The ones that I have received are adorable!!
Thanks for all your help!!
See ya!!

Letters
I get letter asking certain things that I would like to share with readers of CLIFFNotes. Perhaps others are wondering the same thing. Here's a letter that came in this week:
I am a ferret owner and I live in California. I am very well aware of them being illegal here, but he was passed on to me from someone who couldn't take care of him very well. I was wondering. I know ferrets can be seized and euthanized, but how many times does it happen? How often? Are people likely to call the police or animal control on us? Will authorities act upon it? My sister likes to take my ferret out in public and flaunt him around in pet stores. I hate the idea of this for if someone to call animal control and police got a search warrant for our house for ferrets, we'd lose our pet. She doesn't believe me when I tell her it's not safe for the ferret, but she continues to disregard what I say and take him out in public. I also have another question. I've been lightly following the legalization of ferrets in California, but I'm unsure of it's progress now. Could you direct me to a site of the progress or tell me how close or far we are from California ferret legalization? Thank you very much. -Ariel
Confiscations of ferrets are pretty rare. We haven’t had one reported in months. The big dangers to ferrets is just getting out, getting crushed, dogs, and who knows what. Ferrets are tragedy prone.
Animal Control doesn’t like to deal with ferrets. These people are usually humane-oriented and know the law is unfair and hurts people. The people at the Department of Fish and Game are hunters, they have a completely different mentality.
I have yet to hear of a search warrant for a ferret that didn’t involve an alleged bite.
I think your sister is taking unnecessary chances. Ferrets love to get out and meet people, but sooner or later something bad will happen. Try to convince your sister not to parade the ferret out until they are legal.
How nice you asked about websites. We have two; www.legalizeferrets.org and I maintain www.ferretsanon.com for the San Diego chapter of Ferrets Anonymous. I just redid it and hope people find it useful.
Thanks

And Another Letter
Here comes one of those strange emails. We started to make out our "living trust" and I know most people don't like to think about such things, but, one of the things we had to address was what happens to our little Rockette in the event we pass away or can't take care of her anymore. I hate to think about it but we needed to select someone or some organization that would care for her. And I thought you might mention this in your email sometime.
Not planning to leave soon,
Rockette's mom
I don't know how to answer this - anyone want to share their plans?
In Conclusion
We didn't get any photos this week, I had to steal one off Flickr. Sure hope it wasn't copyright protected! So send in those photos.
But we do get interesting letters. Interest in ferrets still seems quite high. I've put a few ads in Craigslist and Backpage and am surprised at the sign ups that come right in.
Our big efforts right now are the Environmental Impact Report and the Revival. It should be an important and interesting meeting - I hope you can make it.
