Schedule Set For Third Annual Legalize Ferrets Revival
Saturday, October 11th in San Diego

Serious Business = Crazy Fun

Geo
Dr Graening is going to discuss our options regarding an Environmental Impact Report - it is time to get this thing started!
Milo Shapiro is a professional communications expert.  He's going to - - - well, you'll find out!
Dr Jeff Jenkins is a leading ferret vet and will discuss cutting-edge veterinary care for ferrets.
Whew!  The schedule if finally put together.  This is a very important ferret event for Californians because we want to finally get our legalization efforts off the ground.

We want to know what path we are going to take regarding an unofficial environmental study or an official California Environmental Quality Act/Environmental Impact Report that will fulfill the requirements to finally remove domestic ferrets from the prohibited species list.

Plus - we're getting to be a big organization.  Over 3200 people receive CLIFFNotes each week.  We've done a really good job of communicating with people and building our distribution list.  California ferret folk have never been pulling in the same direction as we are now.  Still, we could use a little help.  Watching Milo Shapiro work will be worth the price of the ticket.

Who's not going to be there?  We did have one more speaker slot we wanted to fill with a pet bereavement expert.  We couldn't find anyone, the San Diego psychological Assoc is having an important meeting that date so no one from their organization could come.  The San Diego Humane Society was also unable to refer anyone.

On a lark I invited a representative from the Audubon Society - they actually called me back, but declined to send a speaker.  We have a message out to Joan Embery, but don't hold your breath.

Marshall Pet Products is donating a door prize. It promises to be a fun and eventful meeting - please try to make it!

It Was "Serious Fun" Until I Realized We're Crazy

I don't know anyone like ferret people.  Our YouTube contest is still bringing people in, including someone from Brazil.

Writer Wants Contributions For Ferret Book
do you want to tell your story?

I would like to write a book about Ferret owners in California and why they are willing to defy the government over this issue.  I realize that people like you and others that own ferrets feel they are worth it.  Even though I don’t own a ferret (if I did and somebody tried to take them away I would be up on attempted manslaughter charges!!), I believe I understand from all the blogs and articles that they are more than worth the risk.

The thing is this:  a lot of people don’t know what a ferret is and have no idea of what to do with one if they had one.  I want to write stories from people like yourself about their babies and what this whole thing is all about.  I would like for people to send me their stories and photos so I can put them together along with information about ferret health, how to know if a ferret is for them, etc.  And yes, I know, they can get this all on the internet.  But if they don’t know what they are looking for how will they find it.  I want this book to be about the battle to legalize ferrets in California.  I want Californians to understand what they are missing and why there are so many people who are willing to fight for this right!!  I have been telling people about them, but I began to realize that stories and pictures would add a whole lot more to the message.

This is something I really want to do.  No last names (unless they want them printed) and if I get it written in time and if I find a publisher in time (lot of ‘ifs’ there) maybe, just maybe we might have something by October.  I don’t know…I never wrote a book before, so I really don’t know what to expect.  BUT I’M READY TO LEARN!!!

A Word from Jan Goldsmith

Judge Jan Goldsmith, who when a state legislator championed a ferret legalization bill back in 1994 sent an email to us:

"TB: What about your ill-fated save-the-ferrets legislation? Did the effort to legalize pet ferrets come back to bite you?

JG: Not at all. I was representing a constituent group. That was just one piece of legislation. I’m okay with people remembering that; I can take a joke. But people were actually put in jail for having pet ferrets. We got [the bill] through the Assembly. But the Department of Fish & Game was adamant they didn’t want that in California——even though in every other state in the continental U.S., ferrets are legal pets."

Judge Goldsmith is widely expected to be elected the next San Diego city attorney.  TB is Tom Blair, a journalist with San Diego magazine.

Looking For Good Ferret Vet in Valencia

We received a request for a vet recommendation in Valencia, specifically for an adrenal surgery.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

And A Ferret Sitter in San Diego

I am currently looking to find a ferret sitter. I have one female ferret who is 7 years old. She is in very good health. I am looking for someone who has a ferret or two. She is very shy around other ferret so I prefer a small ferret family to watch her so she is not overwhelmed.
I am going to training for work for 3 months. I don't have the exact dates yet but I should be leaving sometime in Oct and will return early January. Can you please send out an email to the group and see if anyone is willing to help me out? I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your help,

Jaime
In Conclusion

I hope to see you at the Revival!  There's still lots to do until we reach our goals.
