My Sincerest Thank You!

We just concluded the You Tube Ferret Legalization Video Contest and it was the most successful thing we've ever done to promote ferret legalization.  I thought having a contest would give us something to talk about in CLIFFNotes while we wait for the Environmental studies, but the videos took on a life of their own.  The creativity, love and fun that went into these videos were amazing.  I can't thank the people who made these videos enough!
Lance's Note: Should we have a monthly You Tube Video competition?

And - there are so many links to www.legalizeferrets.org that the sign ups for this newsletter were more than we've ever received from one event.  135 people signed up for CLIFFNotes so they could vote.  There were nearly as many sign ups from the website as well! Hopefully these videos will be on YouTube for a long time and help to spread the message to many, many more.

I'd love to do this again next year. Lance would like to see us do this every month, but then again - he likes to keep me working constantly!  We can make some improvements in the rules and process, but it was great fun.  THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO MADE A VIDEO OR WHO VOTED.

A Little About Who We Are

We've added about 250 people to CLIFFNotes during the past week.  I know sometimes we have multiple email addresses for the same person.  Many of those people who don't care about this issue voted for videos because people were hustling up votes.  If that's the case, feel free to unsubscribe, but make sure you get get ferret person to buy Christmas wrapping paper from your kid's school - they owe you!

I hope a lot of you new to this newsletter are interested in ferret legalization.  If so, welcome to CLIFFNotes!

CLIFFNotes is run out of the San Diego chapter of Ferrets Anonymous.  We started about 2 1/2 years ago to see if it was feasible to do a ballot initiative to legalize ferrets.  Our polling told us it was not feasible, nor was it a wise thing to do.  But then someone came forward ans asked what we would do with $50,000.  After much thought it was decided we would work towards getting an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) completed.  Some very clever people were called and the ideas started to flow.

Currently a group of people, called our "working group" is doing some initial studies.  A difference of opinion has developed between those who think the research is so sterling that Governor Schwarzenegger won't require a full blown EIR.  The other side (especially me) believes that we are going to have to perform the full EIR, and make sure everything is done by the letter and the government is not going to cooperate but will hopefully go along once we have everything done correctly.

A compromise has been reached.  The one side has until Oct 11th to show progress that would show that a full blown EIR is not necessary.  Failing that, we'll go forward with the EIR, and upon completion, the EIR will be filed with the state of California.

You can help by joining the 3000 Club.  We called it the 3000 Club because we wanted 3000 people to join by paying $10 and agreeing to collect 100 signatures before we filed for the ballot initiative.  There is no ballot initiative and no one needs to collect signatures - but joining the 3000 Club shows how much support we have.  Right now we are just under 600 members.

The ballot initiative was controversial.  A lot of ferret legalization activists hated the idea.  But considering the value of failure, we pulled a lot of people together.  If it wasn't for this idea there would be no plan for ferret legalization.  Lance M wouldn't be the President of Ferrets Anonymous, there would be no CLIFFNotes. Basically there would be nothing going on.
So please go ahead - and if you aren't a member, please join us!

Save The Date - Oct 11th, Ferret Legalization Revival in San Diego

In next week's issue I hope to unveil our speakers list for this year's Legalize Ferrets Revival. Its going to be an exciting program because we will focus on the environmental research going on to legalize ferrets in California.  I hope to have a report from the working group and my wildlife biologist that I wish to hire to perform the EIR.

One sad part, multiple calls and a letter to former assemblyman Jan Goldsmith have gone unanswered.  Jan Goldsmith introduced the first ferret legalization bill in 1993 when he was an assemblyman.  He is now expected to be elected as San Diego's City Attorney.  If find it ironic that someone who wishes to be a public servant won't speak to the public.  (But we've been through that many times before).

I haven't been able to reach Judge Goldsmith - here is his website http://www.jangoldsmithforcityattorney.com/?p=10 .  If anyone can get through, please let me know. I'd still like to have him speak at this year's Legalize Ferret Revival.

Reader Emails:

My mother and I own 3 ferrets and I have owned them in the past in the state of Oklahoma.  So we are very familiar with the habits of ferrets....Well my mom has discovered something that will help a lot of ferret owners.....
We all know how ferrets pick and choose their own spots in the house to use the bathroom...Well my mother has discovered that once they have chosen the spot, if you place newspaper there, they will use it.....Again and again and again....We have even seen all three of our ferrets "run" to use the paper....We have tried several times to leave a litter box out for them when they choose "the spot" but they have NEVER used it....as a matter of fact, they prefer to roll in the litter rather than to "potty" in it....
Needless to say, this has not only made it easier to clean up after, but it will also save the wear and tear on the carpet of all renters!
It really is a cute sight to see the ferrets run across the room to use the paper, and all 3 of our ferrets use it...
Just a piece of information i thought we should share as we all know that ferrets are a lot of work and they can definitely leave a scent on the carpet when they use the same spot over and over again,...
So, maybe you can drop this little helpful hint in the next newsletter....
Sincerely,
Your fellow ferret lover
Tracie

Looking for A Ferret Vet In Riverside

Can anyone recommend a good ferret vet in the Riverside area.  I was asked and I don't know who to recommend.

Ferret Looking for a Home in San Diego

Someone is going off to college and wants to place their five year old female ferret.  The owners would prefer someone who is experienced with ferrets.  If you are interested I will pass your info on.

In Conclusion

Lots of things are happening for California ferret legalization.  I will have exciting new developments on the Ferret Legalization Revival in next week's CLIFFNotes.  A new FA Paw Print is coming out and the state FA is going to have an awesome new website that will be launched in the next few weeks.  Our mailing list is now 5,200 strong !

Keep the faith! We will get these little guys legalized with your enthusiasm and help!
