22 Videos Entered in LegaizeFerrets YouTube Contest
Voting Begins Now - Ends July 12th

Visit http://legalizeferrets.org/videos-contest.html to view and vote!

Ranging from heart-warming to the ridiculous - 22 videos were posted on YouTube and entered into our contest.  I want to sincerely thank everyone who entered!

This contest has been one of the most successful things we've ever done to promote ferret legalization.  I wonder what people 10, 20 or 50 years from now will think if they were to view these videos.  It provides a wonderful snapshot of who is involved in this effort and these great animals we share our lives with.

The one thing we weren't able to do was create a YouTube channel.  If anyone is skilled at that task and would like to volunteer please contact me.  Otherwise I may hire someone to do it.

Our thanks to the sponsors.  One benefactor stepped up and donated the $500 cash first prize.  Marshall Products offered a gift bag, Drs Foster and Smith donated a $25 gift certificate, Pingsford Porridge also offered a $25 gift certificate, Hyperfur sent over a lifetime supply of cheweasels and Dr Rene Gandolfi donated a $50 gift certificate.

The winners will have their choice of prizes until all six prizes are claimed.

EIR Update

A compromise has been reached regarding the status of our Environmental Impact Report.  As you might have read, some members of our working group feel the brilliance of the research will persuade Governor Schwarzenegger that no EIR is necessary.  Others, especially me, feel that without the EIR, we aren't going anywhere.

The working group has worked very hard and put their heart and soul into their effort - I, and everyone interested in this issue, has to respect that.

The compromise is --- they have until October 11th to show they are on the right track.  If not, we will contract with our consultant and get the EIR going.

October 11th just happens to be the date selected for the third "Legalize Ferrets Revival" which will be held where it was last year, at the King's Inn in Mission Valley (San Diego).  This promises to be a very special ferret meeting because the focus will be on the scientific studies and by that time we should have some definitive answers.

I have invited the EIR consultant I wish to use and he has accepted the invitation to speak.  If we don't hire him he can explain the process.  If we do hire him he can also explain his process.

Another very exciting speaker I am trying very hard to get is Judge Jan Goldsmith.  Judge Goldsmith was an assemblyman in 1993 and introduced the first ferret legalization bill.  He is now expected to be elected as the next San Diego City Attorney.  Ironic, that is the office that prosecuted me for owning ferrets (once or twice).  Perhaps that is why his office hasn't answered repeated phone calls, so I sent a letter last week.

This Photo Doesn't Deserve to Be Small

Group photos of ferrets don't usually work small - so here it is full-size.

Ferret Legalization Ride Update:

The Legalization Ride is still coming together, and we're happy to report that things are looking great for this First Annual Event with a purpose like no other event ever! OCFerrets has put up a page to help to promote the the Ride, and to keep information updated as it develops. The official ride patch that will be given to each and every rider at the event has been finalized and we've sent the artwork off to Ann Gruden at www.1ferretstreasures.com is making the ride patches and giving us a great deal on them so we can put more money into the event. Please take a look at her website. There's tons of great embroidered stuff there that you may find that you can't live without!
Ride Patch
For more information on the Ride as it develops, please check out the OCFerrets Ferret Legalization Ride page at: www.ocferrets.org/ferret-ride.html. We'll keep you informed through CLIFFNotes as well, but the sponsors will be updated on the page, as well as give you a simple place to find updates and how to get involved with the Ride, whether you have a motorcycle or not!

Legalize Ferrets in Hawaii?

I received this email and would like to pass it on in case anyone has any ideas.

I fully support the efforts of everyone trying to have ferrets legalized in California but, for the sake of ferrets and ferret lovers everywhere, would it be possible for you to come up with a Legalize Ferrets in Hawaii site? Or at the very least get in touch with a couple of ferret loving friends from the islands or people that are just willing to take one for the team and create a site for the benefit of us in Hawaii or soon going to Hawaii.

I’m sure it seems like a lot to ask, but were all in it together in a way. I have no computer skills, but if I did have some I would be the first to start a full on site dedicated for the legalization of our fuzzys on the islands. I’ve seen and signed a couple of petitions but each one only had about 150 signatures, that’s when I thought of all the signatures we could accumulate if on one big site like yours. I currently live in New Jersey, but come spring I am moving to Oahu for School and I would love to bring my ferret with me, I hate to leave him behind but I have to get started with college (I’m already currently taking a year off). I understand that because the Hawaiian islands are in fact islands, we will have to go to greater lengths but its worth it. I have read many petition comments and all of them are either from Hawaiian residents who would like to own a ferret, couples who own ferrets and have received job offers in Hawaii, people who own ferrets and want to move to Hawaii, and kids like me who own ferrets but are going to University in Hawaii. Almost none of the people who posted the comments were willing to move and leave their ferrets behind.

So yes, while I never ask anything from anyone, I’m asking you for your help. You’ve obviously put together an amazing thing here with this site and over 500 signatures, so who better to ask then a loving owner of ferrets and an efficient organizer as yourself. All in all I would very much appreciate it (as would so many others) your help in making a sister site for the legalization of ferrets in Hawaii or, as I said before, help with getting in contact with a Hawaiian resident who owns ferrets or has owned and is willing to manage a site for the cause.

Thanks for your time and I hope you can find a way to help us.

It would make it easier for us if Hawaii would legalize ferrets.  Hawaii is very concerned about introduced species so they take a very cautious approach.  But ferrets couldn't survive in the wild of Hawaii.  I can't take on another task, this should be done by people who have a connection to Hawaii.  But if anyone has any ideas or would like to help I will pass on the information.

Shopping Recommendations

Just wanted to drop a quick line in case you need filler for next issue...
For many, money is getting tight these days.  My two favorite places to shop for ferret supplies are FerretDepot.com and Dr Fosters & Smith.  I use ZuPreem food, and FerretDepot has the best prices I've found.  For starters, they have the 30lb bags (which my local Petco stores don't carry, and their website doesn't carry either).  Pound for pound, including shipping (which is getting expensive these days), I still saved about $25 buying from FerretDepot, over going to my local Petco and over Petco.com (and their ZuPreem was even on sale).  Additionally, FerretDepot lists important ferret-specific information on their "treat" pages - I just found out that the kid's favorite treats, Bandits, contain sugar (the evil corn syrup no less)!  After getting over the shock of being a bad mom and not having noticed myself (I thought I was vigilant about that sort of stuff), I was so thankful that they had this information readily available.  I was turned on to Dr Fosters & Smith when I was hunting the best price for our first cage (way back when).  They, by far, had the best price for the cage we bought (I surveyed every online store, as well as local Petco & Petsmart).  So there you have it, my two money-saving tips for the day!
[I have no affiliation with either online store; I just like saving money and I hate traditional shopping.  A big thanks to Al Gore for the internet! - ha!]

In Conclusion

I really enjoyed all the ferret videos - I hope we can do it next year with the theme "Fun With Legal Ferrets!"

It is interesting to see how many people have viewed the videos.  This is really a great way to build awareness of ferret legalization.  Stay tuned for next week when we announce the winners!
