San Gabriel Valley Chapter Annual Potluck Lunch

By Claudia T.

Saturday, September 27th will be our annual potluck lunch at the Pasadena Humane Society, 361 S. Raymond Ave.  If you get lost and need directions, my cell phone is 626-327-2917.

The doors will open at 11:00 a.m. and we will be upstairs in the older building.  Lunch will be at noon.  Please remember this is a potluck lunch and if you do not bring the food, we don’t eat.  The plates, cups, utensils, napkins and lemon aid will be provided.

We will have some merchandise for sale.  There will be a raffle basket to raise funds to help with the cost of sending the little ones out of state, white elephant items and silent auction.  If you have any donations for the silent auction or any ferret items you or your ferret no longer want, please bring them with you that day.

Last year Dr. Sari Kanfer from Dr. Domotor’s Animal House in Monrovia was going to speak to the group.  Unfortunately she had a bunny emergency and couldn’t make it (unfortunately the bunny didn’t make it either).  She is willing to give it another try this year.  If you have questions that only a vet can answer, be sure and come.  Hope to see you in September.

Did Arnold Really Write That?

We were surprised to read what Governor Schwarzenegger is writing people who ask him about the ferret issue in California. This is what was recently received:

Dear California Ferret Owner,

Thank you for your correspondence concerning the legalization of ferrets as pets. I appreciate hearing from Californians on issues that are important to them.

Like you, I think that ferrets are great animals. They're not exactly like cats and dogs though, and I believe that we must first study them in order to thoroughly understand their behaviors before we allow people to own them. Many animals just aren't meant to be kept as pets, and it's important to be certain of how they'll affect our environment - for the sake of the animals, their owners and the communities where they live.

So far, no one has completed a study that proves that these little animals would be good, safe pets and the California Environmental Quality Act requires that an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) be conducted first. An EIR evaluates the proposed project's impact on the environment. Until an EIR is conducted on the effects that ferrets have on the environment, it would be inappropriate to legalize ferrets as pets here in California .

Again, thank you for writing. Government is always better because of the active involvement of its citizens.

Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger

Let me go out on a limb and say I think our governor is smarter than this (Lance doesn't think so).  I bet he is really tired of this issue, thinks there are better things to do, yet doesn't want to go against his friends in agriculture and the DFG.  The bright side is he does mention an EIR which would make it hard for him to ignore one if completed.

Still Time To Enter Your YouTube Video

For full details click here  First Prize $500

We have about 8 videos entered.  Thank you everyone!  However, I think only one person grasped what we are trying to do and put their personality into it.  The deadline to enter is the 4th of July.

I'd like to see some more videos entered.  Please be creative, have fun and spread the message that these are domestic animals, and they promise not to bite Governor Schwarzenegger.

Words of Support From Venezuela

How nice to get an email from Venezuelan ferret owners:

Hi! I am writing from Venezuela to tell that the support from here. I have ferrets here, and are not common or that there are laws that prohibit or permit.

I am part of a community of ferrets worldwide, and there he placed an advertisement to support them and that more people were over and help. This is the link to see: http://www.comunidaddehurones.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12531

If you want to write a few words for all those people that will support, can send answering my mail and I are copies to the other people in the community.

And this is my letter to you for governor of California, were copies to read:

I am writing from Venezuela. I am supporting people who asked for ferrets become legal in California. I find it absolutely ridiculous that do not permit, if a bit more informed about them would know who are like having dogs or cats. Apart from the fact that Schwarzenegger is like a hypocrite after exiting in a movie with a ferret in his arms.

It's better to deal with the bad things that really happen, and make laws against many other important things or at least enforce the existing ones, do not make good people who love animals and want to have a completely domestic as it has anyone in the world, because one can not ridiculous nonsense is the law prohibits. Please gentlemen, if they want to be respected ocupense of the things that really worth prohibit and things are not as healthy as it is to have a ferret, stop inventing this bunch of absurd excuses to remain prohibited and a further step towards evolution, and I said a person living in a country totally delayed making laws so ridiculous as this that you have.

Think about this, and acerquense to the evolution of big ideas, not retreat to be like Venezuela or other..

I command greetings from afar, and strength to continue fighting for this.

Shishi, thank you for your help, we wonder if you will get the same letter as above!

2008 Ferret Legalization Ride in the Works

Plans are still being laid, and are starting to come together for the First Annual Ferret Legalization Ride! We're in the process of gathering sponsors (would you like to sponsor this event?) and making the plans for what we hope will become an annual event. Starting in San Diego and ending in Julian, we plan to have an 85 mile ride, music, BBQ and fun & games at the end of the ride. Funds raised from the ride will benefit the California Domestic Ferret Educational Alliance - CDFEA. All pre-registered riders will receive a memorial patch from the event designed by famous ferret cartoonist Deva Kolb, and ride patches will be available at the event for non-riders to purchase. All riders are expected to have insurance and their M1 motorcycle endorsement, with proof of both available at registration. More information will be available as it develops, and the official flyer will be available by the next edition of CLIFFNotes. You can contact the persons organizing the event by emailing: ferretlegalizationride@yahoo.com

Baja Ferret Needs Home

We have a request to find a new home for a ferret in Rosarito Beach, Baja California.  The owners are moving back up to California and have already been caught trying to take her up north.  I recommended driving her through Arizona, but they want a Plan B. Is there anyone else in BC reading this who wants a ferret?  We could send her to Venezuela.

To get on the Fosters and Smith mailing list, receive their catalog and get $5 off - please use this form.  The info will be forwarded to them after July 4th.

This form doesn't work for people using Outlook 2007 - if that's you - please just send me the info.

In Conclusion...

Thank you everyone for your continued support.

Lots of good things happening and I hope 2008 will see solid, significant progress towards ferret legalization.  Activity is at an all time high (we just passed the 5000th person on our mailing list) and we have a clear goal - The Environmental Impact Report.  They asked for it - they're gonna get it!

Please keep supporting us.  Join the 3000 Club if you are not a member, donate and buy merchandise.  We hope to have our Ferrets are more Fun art work done shortly, but we're waiting to get it right. Heidi & Lance are working to get the photos to go with the artwork.
