Question- Hello, first of all I just want to thank you for starting the LegalizeFerrets.org website and emails it is so great to see so many people love little carpet sharks as much as I do.... I was wondering if you could post all of the vets info that you have for the California area, its really hard coming from Reno where its very easy to take them to any vets to not sure which vet will be able to provide check ups for my ferrets. Can you please help with info for vets that I can bring my ferret to in California?

Answer - There is a vet directory on the web.  I have mailed to it and even years ago it was out of date.  This is one more thing for Lance to work on - but go to http://www.fevang.org/ferrets/fvl.html

More on Ear Mites

Thought you might want to add this recent study done overseas regarding the use of Selamectin (Revolution/Stronghold) on ferrets.  Of particular interest is the recommended dosage for effective treatment.
I have used Revolution on my ferrets for over three years now with no adverse effects.  Each new rescue ferret I've taken in has invariably been infested with ear mites.  New rescues are treated after veterinary exam with Revolution and are clear of mite infestation within 72 hours.  This is certainly preferable to treating with an otic solution that takes weeks to eliminate the problem.  This is, of course, my own experience and opinion.
It is important as Dr. Jenkins points out, to have your ferret checked for heart worm prior to treatment with Revolution, since treatment and killing of adult worms can lead to deadly clots in the lungs.

  YouTube Ferret Video Contest Launched

My thanks to Leontine for updating the LegalizeFerrets.org website with information on our YouTube Video Contest.  First prize is $500 cash - Go to the LegalizeFerrets.org website for details.

Marshall Pets Donates A Prize

The folks at Marshall Pet Products donated another prize.  Since first place is $500, the items below looks like the second place prize.  Perhaps more prizes will be donated?  If any other company would like to donate please let me know, I sent out about 18 letters and so far only Marshall Pet Products have answered the call.

I am often asked - how can I help legalize ferrets?  Here's the perfect way.  Break out the video camera or still camera and start taking pictures.  Post it to YouTube and link it to www.legalizeferrets.org (where the rules are posted).

I sent out a press release to our media list, out of 186 sent, only 17 emails were opened meaning the press is not terribly interested in ferrets.  Here's the press release.  Please pass information about our video contest to any other ferret boards or ferret clubs you belong to - it is open to people outside of California.

You will help counter the perception that ferrets are a threat to public health, agriculture, small livestock or whatever and help build our membership and circulation.

If anyone would like to take over our YouTube page - I would certainly appreciate the help!
Welcome Sign Ups From the Artichoke Festival
The artichoke festival was held last week in Castroville and ferret supporters had a table.  Here is the report Dianna who worked the event for ferret lovers all over our state:

I would like to thank all the people that volunteered for the Castroville Artichoke Festival.  Without your participation, the ferret information booth would not have been a reality.   It was very rewarding for me that the different ferret groups came together, worked together and got information out to the general public.  I received the Legalize Ferrets banner from Pat, printed materials from Lance, the cost of the booth from FA.  My son paid for extra printed materials from Fed Ex/Kinkos(we got a discount). Penny, in Santa Cruz, procured a really nice canopy top (it was very easy to set up). She also provided snacks.  Donna, Golden State Ferret Society, came down and provided the Golden State Ferret Society’s banner on Sunday.  Susan from Monterey, Melanie, from Aromas, Dawn, from Hollister, Penny, and my self were there on Sunday.  My husband, son, daughter-in-law, Penny, Dawn, Claudia and myself worked the booth on Saturday.  Both days were very busy.  At times, we were 3 deep at the table.  We got quite a few sign-up for CLIFFnotes.  I will be sending those to Pat.  All of us that worked the booth feel that it was worth the time and effort and because of the strong interest in the ferret, it would be good to do it again next year.  Again, I want to Thank All The Volunteers and everyone else that helped my idea become a Reality.

In Conclusion -

Since we have so many recent sign ups I wanted to give a little background.

LegalizeFerrets.org was organized out of the San Diego Ferrets Anonymous chapter two years ago.  After a ferret amnesty bill got nowhere in the legislature, some of us, namely me, wanted to consider a ballot initiative.

To make sure we had some support before we launched it we decided to set a goal of 3000 people signing up by paying $10 and volunteering to collect 100 signatures before we filed the initiative.

We also did a Field Research poll, and much to our dismay only 38% of Californians said they'd vote to legalize ferrets.  That killed the idea of an initiative, but then someone offered us a large chunk of money.  With that money we were able to afford an Environmental Impact Report.  When the idea of an EIR was first brought up by the Califonria Fish and Game Commission (along with the premise that ferret owners would pay for it) we thought it would be in the $250,000 range.  But since ferrets don't drive or cause noise problems a lot of normal requirements don't apply.  It became affordable!

That is where our effort is right now, an EIR.  We have real hope of legalization.  But if people aren't watching, if they let just a few people manage this, we will fail again.

This newsletter, CLIFFNotes was originally used to ask people to join the 3000 Club.  But it evolved into something much more.  It became an important tool to grow our list, keep people informed and get involved.

If you aren't a member of the 3000 Club - please join.  It is a very tangible count as to how many people think ferret legalization is worth $10 and staying informed.
