I don’t know how many thank you letters you get, but I felt the need to express how thankful I am to you and your staff and all the people involved with CLIFFNotes. I have learned so many useful things from this newsletter. I also have a 12 year old granddaughter who reads it with me every Sunday. She was so excited about what you are doing for ferrets, she took a petition school and had teachers and students sign it and then she forwarded it to Governor Schwarzenegger and the State Legislators. She got a reply back from the Governor. I am sure it was just a form letter but it made her happy to think he took the time to respond to her and explain some of the reason for the ban on ferrets in California and the many things that have to be done to turn this crazy law around. I just wanted to take the time to thank you and all the people who are helping in this effort. We also have some ferrets, 2 males and 1 female, but the 2 year old doesn’t get along with the other two. We could use any suggestions from any members how we could get them to use to each other. They range from 2 years and to four months. They are the laughter in our day. But we would like to know how to get them to get along with each other. The 2 youngest get along fine. We go them from a rescue shelter in so they were used to each other .. The lady we got them from is such a wonderful person at this time she has 72 ferrets and takes care of them all by herself and could sure use any help that anyone in that area could give her. Her name is Linda S. Anyone who would like to give her a hand can email me back and I can email them her address or phone number. Please post this thank you note in the next CLIFFNotes so all the people in California will know they are not alone in their fight with this foolish law. Our 3 ferrets keep us entertained all the time, also keep us very busy. So you can imagine how it would be to have 72 of them and Linda also takes in the sick ones and nurses them back to health if she can. If the ferret gets too sick she will then and only then have them humanely put to sleep and have them cremated and brings them back home and buries them in her yard. She is such a tremendously giving person. I think it would be nice to give her a great big THANKS LINDA. Thank all of you at CLIFFNotes, I look forward to your newsletter every Sunday Karen K kholt71243@aol.com Hi Pat, Feel free to use part, all (or none if it seems not appropriate) of the below information. I've attached some pics. - Some need resizing. Use all or some - I'm fine with whatever you choose. I'll save the "speaker" pictures for next month. Foster is so cute, such a devil, and looks so innocent. We made a movie out of all the images. Don't get excited - remember no one sent me to video school. Click here to see all the scenes. Something I thought about - why don't we propose a National Ferret Appreciation Day in California? There's various other "Days". I Googled National Ferret day and got some supposed hits - but did not find anything significant either for CA or the US. Isn't this something we should support? It could be National Ferret Day, National Ferret Appreciation Day, or just California Ferret Appreciation Day. You could ask for people's opinions and votes on what to call it. If it was always a weekend we could encourage ferret owners to buy ferret gifts at Petco or Petsmart to get a gift for ferret day. Sounds kind of crazy I know, but maybe it would be good PR. I found something that claimed May 5 was the day, but didn't come up with anything online.
CDFEA has completed filing for state tax exemption, retroactive to June, 2007, and we are not anticipating any issues with this. We have also completed our Charity Registration and are awaiting word back from the Department of Justice/Attorney Generals Office. Again, we anticipate no problems here. Once these filings are approved, CDFEA will apply for state permits to legally conduct raffles and other fundraising events. We expect this to happen within the next couple of weeks. Although we have received our Federal tax exemption from the IRS (501(c)3), we are still required to complete these others filings per state law.
CDFEA will conduct its annual Board of Directors meeting sometime near the end of July, 2208. More information will be posted here at a later date. ![]() |
LegalizeFerrets.org - YouTube Video Contest
$500 First Place Prize
How better to announce a contest on videos than with a video?
Obviously I didn't get the video-editing lessons I wanted for Christmas - but here is the announcement of our Ferret Video Contest. Details are not yet up on www.legalizeferrets.org - but let's get started!
First Ill mention I have 5 ferrets so ear mites are a real inconvenience, packing up 5 ferrets and going to the vet isn’t the easiest thing. The first time we got ear mites our vet at the time gave them each Ivermectin Ear Treatments. What I didn’t like is you have to do this twice. So twice I had to bring all 5 to the vet. The second thing I didn’t like was it took 3 weeks maybe a little longer to it to clear up. My baby’s were in pain. We did that like 4 times total because the mites came back a few months later. So the next time we got mites we took them to a different vet recommended to me and I love him and his staff. Our new vet prescribed us REVOLUTION for cats. I know at first I was scared it would be too harsh or have some side effects, but it was a low dose of .10ml a month. I never noticed any type of reaction, no skin discoloration, or lethargic ferrets. That was 4 months ago and we haven’t had any recurrences. It also prevents mites, heartworm, intestinal hookworm, roundworm, fleas and their eggs. It was cleared up in about 10 days and I’m so glad we tried it. I recommended it to my friends and anyone who will listen, hence the letter.
So long story short Revolution for cats 5.1-15 lbs. .10ml a month and no ear mites so far. We are extremely happy with it.
Thanks Erica K. PS: I'll drop my vets name just in case anyone in the Central Valley, or Sacramento areas is looking for a good vet.

Other Dangers for Ferrets
Accidental Ferret Poisonings: Marijuana & SUGAR SUBSTITUTE [Reported BY: The American Council for Ferret Health, Welfare and Policy] Ingesting marijuana may spell disaster for your pet ferret. “I just had to find some info for someone whose ferret was in an avoidable situation,” stated Marijuana Marijuana (Cannabis sativa), a leafy plant used for its psychological and physiological effects, can cause neurological toxicity in both house pets and in children. [Appleboam-2006; Jones-1978]. Crandall warns of accidental poisonings of pet ferrets from the recreational drug have been reported in the literature. Following ingestion a pet ferret became comatose after experiencing bouts of sneezing and ataxia.[Smith-1988]
Sugarless Chewing Gum Another source of poisoning may be your “sugarless” chewing gum. Ferret owner, Xylitol, a sugar alcohol and “sugar substitute” is a common ingredient in gums, candies and diet foods. It may be the likely culprit in more than 727 suspected and documented toxicity cases in pet dogs reported to the
In dogs initial signs are vomiting, sudden drops in blood sugar, and GI bleeding. Following large amounts ingested, signs of low blood sugar appear with 30 to 60 minutes, where as smaller amounts may cause a delay in signs for up to 12 hours, reports
Prevention Ferret owners are advised to keep their pets and children away from house plants, diet foods and other substances, such as marijuana. If you suspect your pet is suffering from poisoning, contact your veterinarian or call the

Lance M. Reports from Califur IV - Irvine, CA
I experienced something totally new yesterday. I was asked to be a guest speaker at a convention for artists, cartoonists, and fur suit enthusiasts called Califur IV. This year's theme was "Something Steampunk This Way Comes" - and it was dedicated to the art involving animals that are inventors, tool-users, professionals, etc. The artists were amazing, but then I got a look at the crazy people in fursuits who were there, and it blew my mind!
Since I was there as a ferret legalization advocate for legalizeferrets.org, I did a morning and an afternoon session on ferret legalization and had a decent number of people show up for the sessions that were held in break out rooms at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, CA. -There were a number of people in attendance who already had ferrets, who had questions about all kinds of things ranging from legalization to feeding, care and other topics.
I also used the venue as as opportunity to do a bit of networking. Because of this, the new FA newsletter will have a comic section done by a real cartoonist that will depict ferrets. -So keep an eye out for upcoming issues of the FA newsletter! Also, I have another person who has volunteered to build/create a fursuit for OCFerrets for use at rallies and other media events here in Southern California. I have no doubt that this suit will be excellent, since his own fursuit was outstanding! I can see these sorts of conventions being hotbeds for ferret legalization and another excellent way to get the word out about legalizing domestic ferrets. I thought I was going to be short for material this issue - but member submissions came in! How great to get ideas and enthusiasm from all around.
Ferret legalization efforts in the past were handicapped because one person did all the work. I don't say that as criticism of other people because I was guilty of that too. How nice it is to see Lance taking on such a large load. Other people are working hard, too, working in their areas of expertise.
Sign ups for CLIFFNotes continue to come in. I posted three ads in Craigslist and Backpage and had over thirty people signed up that day!
So welcome, join us and watch out - because we are going to make these little guys legal sooner than anyone thinks!
