![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SUGGESTIONS ANYONE? Specials, TV Shows, etc. As for suggestions for ideas - This may be out of our league, but why not get the San Diego Zoo (through their Zoo News magazine) to do a special on ferrets? Or even inundate Animal Planet, Petco, and Petsmart to show more ferrets on their website? The Zoo News may work best for the San Diego area, but we could make the same request or even submit on our own an article talking about ferrets to other zoo publications throughout the state.
As a separate long-shot - and please don't get any hopes up on this - but I will also mention this issue to a friend of mine. She works for a local TV station (Ch4) that does segments on issues that concern local San Diegans...while I know she went on a charity/reporting trip out of the country recently, I can see if she or any of her co-workers are interested in doing a segment on this issue. I can't promise anything on this - this is just one of those ideas that may or may not work... Cristina

NATIONAL FERRET DAY?
I believe a day for ferrets is a good one; but NOT on MLK day..It would only serve to infringe on an established day, and may just lose followers. Try Valentine's Day, one of love and peace...(And what better day to present a loving furball, full of licks and surprises to the one you love?
(even if it's yourself)

The $50,000 Question
I was pleased to receive a serious email asking what we would do with a $50,000 donation. Then it hit me - "I don't know!"
LegalizeFerrets.org was originally formed to study the option of doing a ballot initiative. $50k or 100k would be a good start to getting off the ground - but I'm not sure it is the best use of funds. There were those who thought a failed ballot initiative would set us back for years and there were those like me who thought it would help get the idea off the ground.
Supposedly there are those in the state government who want a CEQA study (California Environmental Quality Act) study done before legalization studies move further, but most ferret lovers believe this is a red herring used as an excuse to not deal with the issue. The last ferret bill in Sacramento would have spent $35k on CEQA - and $250k if there was any evidence that ferrets were out there damaging the environment, agriculture or public health.
I would like to know if there are any video production companies out there who would like to film a thirty second commercial for ferrets. I saw one company with a price of 2k. My hope is if we aired it on cable in a few markets it would pick up more news coverage.
I will pass this question around to other people in the pet and veterinary industry to see what they think - but your opinion matters, too. Please take the below poll:
Assemblyman Chuck DeVore
Answers Constituent on Ferret Issue "Thanks. As I recall, I did vote for this measure the last time it came up. I'll look into it, but my legislative list is already fairly full for the coming year."
All the best,
Chuck DeVore
State Assemblyman, 70th District
Finally, someone in Sacramento provided an answer. If you live in Orange County please get a letter out to Assemblyman DeVore, thank him for his answer and ask him to sponsor a ferret legalization bill in 2008!
Learning From Other's Mistakes
I received another email (those asking what I would do with 50K are much more fun) about a pet ferret crushed in a recliner. Ugh! These situations are terrible. -I've had my share of pet tragedies. As a matter of fact, this morning I lost most of the fish in my aquarium. All we can think of is the sponge I used to clean the glass on the inside was contaminated with some cleaner. - I feel terrible. To this end, I'd like to share a few rules we have to abide by in order to keep our ferrets safe:
**Ferrets must be in their cage whenever the dishwasher, clothes washer or dryer are in use. Ferrets can very easily be inside these appliances without you knowing. Ferrets are much safer in a cage as opposed to having free run of your house or apartment.
**Take roll call and always do a head count. If I don't see all three of my guys running around, nothing is going to get done until I can guarantee their safety. Ideally, train your ferrets to come to a squeaky toy. (Note: this does not work for deaf ferrets of course, so you will have make doubly sure that your hearing-impaired furkids are safely caged). **Become familiar with your ferrets' hidey holes, sleeping spots and favorite areas. Make sure to clear those areas first when looking for your ferrets. Ferrets are creatures of habit and tend to return to areas they enjoy. This may help you get to your chores sooner, and keep everyone safer. The Name is ... Quito
![]() Thanks everyone who suggested a name for my new ferret. Two people suggested "Hitch" and a number of other good suggestions came in. I like the name Gomez which was suggested and I tried using that, but it came out "Gomer." Then watching a clip on Forrest Gump where he was introducing "Dallas from Phoenix" and other people it came to me to name this ferret Quito. Quito (Ecuador) was my hoped for next vacation, but since I once again got laid off and have started my own company, come summer vacation time I will be either too poor or too busy to go.
In any regards Quito has gained weight this past week and is beginning to come out of his shell.
